Thanks bro!
I don't know... maybe you are psychic!
Actually the War Wheel first appeared in Blackhawk comics back in '52 but has reappeared over the decades. There's at least a couple covers with Blackhawk pointing a gun at them. A version of the war wheel has even appeared in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated shows. The planes are the original ones flown by the Blackhawks. Although the Blackhawks have flown many planes and jets over the years, this particular model (based on the Grumman X5F5 Skyrocket) are their most popular and iconic.
Dude, this was very much the picture that almost wasn't. Remember when I did the original Daredevil pic and you thought this was the big thing I was working on? I'd mentioned it wasn't but the thing I was working on wasn't going well. Well, that was the Blackhawks. I'd built a landscape, a 3D logo, an airplane hangar, the plane exterior and 7 members of the Blackhawks team (though the plan was to add Lady Blackhawk as well). It was important for me to get the suit right but I just couldn't get what I wanted even after trying several methods. I also realized the picture of them all just standing around looked too boring to me. In spite of having put in a lot of work, I scrapped it. Finally many months later, I decided I had put too much work in to just throw away so I goggled Blackhawk images and when I saw the War Wheel, an idea came to mind.
I built some basic interiors for the planes, then the war wheel and STILL had a hell of a time making those outfits! After several more failed attempts at the outfit, I ended up using Genesis so all those M4 Blackhawks I'd come up with previously went to waste but at least I came up with an outfit that while nothing great, was at least acceptable to me. I had originally wanted to do the 6 man team for this one but by the time I got to the 6th (3 are in the planes), I couldn't seem to get him in the pic without getting in the way of FX or distracting from the composition. Ultimately, I'd exhausted all the effort I was willing to put into this piece but I would still consider doing something a little more sexy for a Lady Blackhawk pic in the future.
