First off, I've always considered myself more of a guy who occasionally illustrates than an actual illustrator. This is one reason why I prefer coming up with my own images to doing commissions. Still, every now and again, I'll make myself available for this kind of work and that's kind of what happened here when I agreed to do the cover for the next issue of Roger Keel's Jack Banyon. Roger had a very specific idea of what he wanted... and it's a fine idea, I just wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off but I guess we need to challenge ourselves sometimes so I did here. In the end, I'n not entirely happy with what I did but I'm not entirely unhappy either. I tried to do a little bit of a golden age style to match the tone of the book but I was having a hard enough time just trying to get him what he'd asked for! Anyway, for any who might be curious, here are Roger's directions:

"In the foreground we can see Jack at the right of the cover, he is standing in the rear of a boat. He has one foot on the gunnel of the boat and is in a struggle with a man in a Nazi uniform. The Nazi is on another boat a the left of the cover in a similar pose. The Nazi has a gun (Luger??) in one hand. Jack is holding that hand and it is pointing up in the air. They are grabbing each other with their other hands. We can see a woman ( dark hair) holding a young boy( dark hair), in Jack’s boat. She is near to Jack and in the foreground.
In the Nazi’s boat we can see the driver, man with thin mustache. (see notes at the end)

In the middle of the cover, behind Jack and the Nazi we can see the long neck and open mouth of a sea monster (Nessie).

If possible show a ruin castle in the far background, on the land.

Notes:
The driver of the Nazi boat:  Rupert Jones:  About 5’ 10” thin, longish face. Thin moustache, slicked back hair. Smokes cigarette in holder. Has snooty expression on his face at all time. Well dressed. Perhaps with a cravat around his neck. He is about 40 in age.

I can send you a sizable Stone Island Comics logo.
You can create a cover logo to suit the art.

Add Mine and John Lambert’s name to the cover. "

It should be available sometime next year from Indy Planet (as the first couple of issues are now).

OzZy: I know I've often said "thanks for the kind words" but I think this may be the first time I've said thanks for the kind emoticons!
CDA: Thanks man! It's funny... those detailed instructions reminded of another job I did several years ago. I was doing a website for this store and the owner wanted a logo image so he offered me the job. He wanted a turtle wearing a baseball cap and sandals with a gift box with a ribbon in his lap and a drink in one hand while he sat on a horseshoe magnet magnetized to chains that formed a swing from a palm tree. I turned the job down but when he showed me the illustration he'd gotten done elsewhere, I hated it so much that I agreed to do it for a fraction of what he'd paid. He still uses my basic logo illustration to this day though the gift box and drink have been removed. I guess even he came to realize that was a bit much.
