Much recognition must go to my co-creator as he did most of the work. It was Kevincal's idea to use a duel similarity with the characters' and the models' relationships, to represent our take on the competition's theme. I jumped at the chance to do Polaris, she was a lot of fun. Then I saw his Havok and was blown away.
I learned a lot from this exercise; it was quite advantagous to be able to bounce ideas back and forth. Kevs a great artist and a lot of fun to work with. Sign us up for the next one!

Working with matrixblur was awesome cause he had lots of great ideas and
he is freakin' amazing on armor - can you imagine a matrixblur Ironman
(or Ironmaiden?) Anyways, we bounced around a bunch of ideas and finally
settled on Tom and Nicole as Havok and Polaris. We did some homework and
came back with our favorite costumes for both characters. Since they
were from different eras, we decided to explain away the difference by
pointing out the ghosts of past relationships still haunt Havok to this
day. That, or the fact that Polaris is nuttier than a squirrel orgy in
April and forgot which costume to put on :D

Re: Havok, I picked this version of the costume because I liked the way
the energy effects looked and thought it'd be fun to try and duplicate.
Building the visor, chest disc, and armor probably took the longest but
then what proved to be equally challenging was making the hands look
interesting since they were just dark shapes upon a dark shape. I
settled on two-tone gloves that I ended up really liking in the end.

This is just great with a capital 'Fantastic'.

What I like about this pic is that both you guys are at the same high skill level - the perfect combo.

To answer your posts:
Winterhawk, the background is around 7 layers. The basic idea of it is to make a giant doughnut and cut out random chunks (think the difference between pineapple rings and pineapple chunks). Then I filter with a motion blur or radial blur and set the layer blend to dodge or lighten. I duplicated the layers a couple times, varying color, size, and rotation to create the rotating coil effect. Set the blurred ring layers over a gradient star and voila!

bikerbot, that isn't Tom's original body - if it was, he'd be a lot shorter than Nicole Oh and yes, I think I will be posting some of my stuff (both old and new) here so watch out for it!

fantastic job on both characters, Tom fits the role really well and although the work done on polaris is excellent to me Nicole doesn't look right in the part.
still a damn good pic nonetheless.

Oops, sorry, slipped into the wrong battlesuit just then. :) The more I look at this Manip, the more I like it. I love the Tom/Nicole :: Havok/Polaris connection, that is spot on. Nothing wrong with the hair that I can see. And the armor is great. (Kev is right, you should do an Iron Man. Or Iron Woman. Ooohhh...)
Kev, the expression on Havok's face is excellent, and he fits the body posture just right. (Can I assume this wasn't Tom's original pose?)

All in all, a great Manip. Kev, can we expect more posts from you here, now that you are a member?

Kev also did the awesome background on this. Somebody ask him how he did it, 'cause I wanna know too!

What's up with Polaris' wig? Looks like its not on right. Cause everbody knows no one really has green hair, she is a blonde that just wears a wig, right? right?
