I'm not sure exactly what the problem is with this one but something really bothers me about it. Sort of seems like the top of the figure doesn't match up with the legs somehow and the head seems wrong. Not to mention the arms and hands and blah, blah, blah... The one on the left is the original layout and the one on the right was flipped over. The flipped one looks better to me which seems sad. Which looks better folks? The flat colors or the shaded? Second question: I feel like its proper to post most things I do. The work I'm 'happy' with and the stuff I'm not so that I can get authentic critiques on my work. Does everyone feel that way or should I just post the stuff I'm happy with?

I like them both... I don't see what the problem is. But if I had to pick on of these two, I would have to say the one on the right. I personally like the flat colors. But then again, on the rare occcation I do a drawing for HM... they are flat. I like it that way. So, my choice is strictly a personal opinion. But they both look really good.

As for posting... post what you want. If you want critiques... that is the only way to get them.

I think the one on the right looks better. Two reasons:

1. to me, the one on the left looks like he's looking back over his shoulder -- a reactionary and somewhat passive pose. The on on the right looks as if he's looking toward something ahead of him, preparing for something. I know it's odd, since they're the same image.

2. the colours work better on the right-hand one. With the heavy blacks you've used, the near-white highlights on the shaded version are just too stark and don't really mesh with the lighting levels established by the inks. The blues on the right-hand image have a more natural look because there aren't bright highlights and they flow better into the blacks.

I'm not sure what you think is wrong with him. I suppose it depends on your intent with the character. You have gone with a highly stylized version, that I think works okay for Batman in the piece, but maybe better in a more Batman-esque setting. The one issue I would take with the look of the figure, is the huge forearms and hands... I understand the the style choice, but in this case it just too big. IMHO

As far as the coloring technique goes... in this case the flats do not work as well. I think Ker is on the right track with his thoughts. The posterized "Hard Cut" he's talking about would be a perfect match for your abstract take.

I think either way looks fine, and if anything give the "HARD CUT" color look a try instead of the airbrushing, sometimes I have the same problem with an image where for some reason all the airbrushin' i'm doin' is not makin' me happy and then I just simplify and it works out just fine . . . . . as far as posting what you're happy with and what you're not? I think every good artist knows where he or she went wrong in the stuff they do, so ya just learn from that piece and apply to the next. Hope this was helpful! Keep up the good work!
