First HeroMorph posting!

This is, as the text says, Milla Jovovich as Dead Girl. It was about my ninth or tenth manip. Milla was originally posing for Versace. I gave her a slight haircut, got rid of her dress, then added the costume. I did the background in the 3D modelling program Bryce, and smudged it to match the painted look of the rest of the piece. Yes, it's supposed to look painted, not photorealistic.

My main problem with this piece, looking at the piece now, is the logo. It's floating, and completely lacks depth. There's also some ugly edges around, God alone knows why I never got rid of them. (shakes head)

This was the best manip I did for a very long time, and I'm still proud of it.

I did this after a fellow artist (and good friend) at C2F asked me for more X-Statix pics. This was a couple months after Dead Girl.

Alyssa Milano's head on a nude model's body. Costuming done the usual way, generic Roman-type background done in Bryce and smudged.

This is okay, but not as good as Dead Girl. The nose and neck are wonky, the background's too generic, and it's too smudgy in spots (even by my standards). I also should have made the energy brighter.

The third X-Statix girl. (And the last pic I'm posting for a while; don't want to flood the site too much!)

Winona's face, somebody's hair, somebody else's body. Costuming done the usual way. I extended her hair a bit, and made part of her breasts. The background's a photo of a supernova with a spiral effect done, and some post-production. It's supposed to be her teleportation effect.

This is the best manipped of these three pics, but Dead Girl is better overall IMO, because of the background. I really love how some of the wrinkles on this one came out, though. Problems... the face is too bright.

Drew Barrymore as Harley Quinn, my favourite character.

This was my first manip ever. Please keep that in mind as you look at it! Personally, I look back at it now and wince... but I thought I'd post it for comparison purposes, since one of the other pieces I'm posting was a redo of this one. Sort of.

I basically just painted over everything, no proper techniques or anything. Just loads and loads of smudging.

You guys may have seen this one before...

This was sort of a redo of my first pic. Drew Barrymore as Harley again, with a base photo taken from the same photo session. I think it's a bit better than the first one. :)

I first cleaned up the base pic. The costuming was then done the usual way (for future reference, this means: colour change, burn and dodge, smudge, add wrinkles + seams with yet more b&d and smudging). Any shading or lighting that's in the costume is my work, cause the base pic had really, really bland lighting. The background was done in Bryce, all from scratch, and smudged to get the painted look. The photo of Harley and Ivy was a separate manip. I reused it for another pic, as you will see... or will have already seen, likely.

Harley Quinn's desk

This was a direct follow-up to my second version of Harley. I put the Harley + Ivy photo, and the gun in the background of that piece, but they proved more or less invisible. I thus decided to submit a close up, and added the Joker manip just for fun.

Harley and Ivy were two women posing on a cruise; I slapped Drew Barrymore and Laeticia Casta's heads on them, and did the costuming the usual way. Ivy's wearing poison ivy leaves, of course. You can also see what's left of the ship's original owner behind the girls...

The Joker was a heavily altered Willem Dafoe with a grin taken from another photo. The suit I cobbled together from various photos. The background's Bryce.

The gun was made from various Bryce primitives. It looks more like a toy than a real gun, but that works for Harley.

There was no real post -production on this piece, it was just a straight Bryce render. Looking back, I probably should have done more touch-ups. I was going for more of a photorealistic look here, but I don't think I really succeeded. I'm still putting it in the photomanip section, since the main elements here are manips.

Elektra, walking away from a recent assignment.

Can't remember the model's name, but I think someone else has used this exact pic for another manip, so maybe y'all can enlighten me. Costuming done the usual way, background done the usual way. Sai made from scratch. Uh... can't really think of anything else to say. I like the bloodstain on the sign.

Um... no, that's it.

Jaime Pressley as Emma Frost, caught in the middle of transforming into her diamond skin.

Face, hair and body Frankensteined together. The skin tone was all over the place, so I desaturated the piece to B&W and then recoloured everything. I did the usual stuff for the costuming. The diamond effect (which I'm really happy with) I created using a crystalline texture I made (a metallic Bryce abstract that I carved up into lots of little triangles) and a translucent mask. The light glinting off her hand I did based on a tutorial at Shiver 7 (http://www.shiver7.com/tutorials/), and the little refraction spectra were from scratch. The background (smudged Bryce, as usual) is the Xavier Institute from Grant Morrison's New X-Men.

For the logo-conscious, this was one of my first pics with a standardized logo. (I think Harley Quinn 2 was *the* first.) Yes, it's still just a handwritten B, but it's the *same* handwritten B I've used in every pic since.

I still really like this piece, though I've done better since.

Okay, here's a few more pics. Uma Thurman, heavily modified, as Shikari of the Legion of Superheroes. This is... okay. I wasn't originally going to post it here, but the 90k version on C2F is... well, it's crap. I wanted to post the full version somewhere. Shiny stuff done with a curve, everything else is standard costuming and/or recolouring. The background's Bryce, but I don't really like it now. Too generic. And I suddenly noticed that she's not casting a shadow. Oops. :p

The Cassandra Cain Batgirl, Frankensteined together from a couple photos, background in Bryce.

Another piece I wasn't initially sure about posting. But what the hell... This was one of my earliest attempts at a cape, and it shows. The fall of it is all wrong, and it doesn't cast a shadow. Shame, cause I think the costuming is otherwise pretty good. I really ought to do another version of Cassie, to do her justice. Eventually. :p

This is Dream of the Endless, of course. The face was once Johnny Depp, but I doubt you can tell any more. (But would anyone look like Dream does?) The skin and eyes were recoloured. The whole face was stretched out a lot, and deep shadows added in strategic spots to create the appropriately gaunt look. The hair was done from scratch, as were the chest and cloak. The ruby was made using the same texture I used for the diamond effect for my Emma Frost piece, and then smudged, burnt and dodged a lot.
The text is taken from the prologue to Season of Mists, in The Sandman #21. I think it's the best description of Dream that Neil Gaiman ever wrote. And the same section also has fascinating descriptions of most of the other Endless... So there will be more of these. Eventually.

Might as well post all of my Batman related pics...

This is Bats visiting his parents' grave on the anniversary of their murders. It was the response to a challenge to do a piece with dark lighting. It is, indeed, really, really dark. Apologies if you have to play around with your monitor settings to see it properly!

This was ninety-something percent Bryce. The main things added later were Bats' cowl and the edges of his cape, as well as the rain effect. I did this only a couple months ago, but with the benefit of hindsight and C2F reviews, I probably should have done more post-production.

Overall... There's a number of problems with it (I'll let you guys look for them this time, LOL), but I still quite like it.

More later.

I was going to save this for later, but then I realized there's not much left that I really want to post here.

This is a character I created for an original concept theme day at C2F. I wrote up a huge bio, which you can find at http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~zek/art/eve.html. (How do I make this a link?) I won't post it here, to save myself the wrath of Max. :)

This was originally Audrey Tautou's head (and neck) on Yasmeen Ghauri's body. Yasmeen was wearing a pink swimsuit thingy and clear plastic boots that I had to get rid of. I cleaned up the skin a bit, then desaturated to recolour it. I redid the original hair in similar style but totally different colours. The costuming is entirely from scratch, including the fishnets, boots, belt and tank top. I was going for a sort of mismatched punk look... like she randomly grabbed a bunch of clothing matching a particular aesthetic without any real care as to whether it fit together. The background was done in Bryce and smudged to match the painted look. The catwalk texture is mine, the bricks aren't. Finally, the lighting was done using a mask.

This is (by far) my favourite of my own manips.

I said I was gonna do more of these, didn't I? Here's Gallery of the Endless #2: Delirium. Unlike the folks at C2F, you guys get actual legible text, ain't that great?

Del's my second favourite member of the Endless, and my first choice for the sequel to Dream. The model's Chloe Sevigny. I recoloured her skin, and did all the hair, clothing and jewelry from scratch. So were the butterflies, though those were partly based on photo reference, except for one. I'm inordinately fond of the safety pin she's wearing on her necklace, for some reason. The background is just random splotches of colour. I had something else in mind, but the text ended up obscuring it too much. I actually created it by making a copy of the pic, blurring the hell out of it (gaussian), adding a lot of noise, blurring some more (radial) and then using a fairly random curve. Try it, you can get some fascinating Jackson Pollock stuff that way.

The text is from the same source as last time, the prologue to Season of Mists in The Sandman #21.

My third Endless Gallery picture: Despair, the queen of, erm, despair. Yes, she's a she. No, you can't tell. With that face, how could you?
As to my method, I just did a quickie sketch of her and worked it over a bit to get my usual digital painting look. This included colouring, adding details like warts and blotches, and some skin texture. The background is entirely from scratch. The web took just ages... and now 90% of it is obscured. :p
This was a real quick one, I don't think I spent much more than about 12 hrs on it.
For an idea of how much I added in "post-production", you can find (a smaller version of) my original sketch at http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~zek/art/base.jpg.

Not sure who the model is, just someone I had a pic of in the backstock. Standard costuming, all the accessories are from scratch, I used the 3D program Bryce to give the NERV logo some texture.

Enjoy.

This is a collaboration I did with QFX for a theme day at C2F. I decided to post it here too. This is Alexis Denisof and Melina Kanakaredes, respectively, as the Ultimate versions of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

I did the costuming, all basically from scratch excepting some minor use of a curve on the metal parts of Quicksilver's costume. QFX did the Poser (his first work in that application, I believe) and the Frankensteining, as well as putting everything together.

The model was rome random smoking chick. The eyes are frankensteined in, the model's were closed. The lighter's mostly from scratch, ditto the flame. The backgrounds a microscope slide of lung cells. It was supposed to be heart cells, but this looked better. The text is from _Sandman_ #21.

So, I wanted to do an Animal Man pic, cause there just aren't that many around. But I just couldn't get it to look right... the arm, that was the problem. It looked mummified and I just couldn't fix the damn thing! So, I got frustrated and erased the pic. Sorry.

Really, though...

Oldie alert! This is about a year old, it's not a recent pic at all.

I was posting some stuff over at Bold and came across a few pics I never posted here. And I figured, what the heck, why not post them here too?

This is "Mr. Stock Photography" as Grant Morrison's Animal Man. The body is entirely from scratch, based on photo reference. The background is a Bryce (3D program) wireframe. The pencil is a from-scratch Bryce model. The arm is *supposed* to be too small. That's why the pic's being erased, yeah? Anything else is a genuine screw up and is fair game for criticism.

Songbird of the Thunderbolts -- one of my favourite characters.

The base pic was a girl jumping, the face is Dido (not cause I'm an especial fan, but because I wanted to use a singer to get this kind of expression, and she was the only one I could think of who looked even remotely right for the character). Costuming from scratch, energy effect from scratch, background done in the 3D program Bryce.

This is my submission for the June challenge at Bold Comics.

Spring-Heeled Jack is a sort of urban legend of early Victorian London. I'm not sure what the deal is with this version of the character, but he's probably a scientist who experimented on himself, mutated into a weird, superhumanly powerful demonic creature, went borderline psychotic and became a (likely very violent) vigilante. Probably.

Photoshop, based on a photo of a crouching guy and another of Big Ben.

This is a manip of two of the original characters I'm working with. On the right is Eve, who may be passing familiar to some folks (I've done a few other pics of her), on the left is her girlfriend, Chloe.

Not gonna go into too much detail about how I did what... the base pic was a 3D render in DAZ Studio (a freeware wannabe Poser clone, for the uninitiated), I stuck on the faces of Audrey Tautou (Eve) and Alexis Bledel (Chloe), made all their clothing from scratch, and did the background in 3D using Bryce 4 with some lighting and texture touchups in Photoshop 7. If anyone wants any more details, email or PM me, or take a look at the ridicolously detailed art notes for this image over at comics2film.

Hope y'like it.

Yes, I've finally done a Supergirl manip. Pray for my soul. This was for a Cheesecake theme day at C2F (mmm, cheesecake...)

This is WWE diva Torrie Wilson as Linda Danvers, aka Peter David's version of Supergirl. I decided specifically to do this version of the character because (a) I'm a huge fan of PAD's work on her and (b) I cordially dislike the new version of Kara Zor-El and have some serious issues with her character and the writing in her series.

A side benefit of doing Linda is that it allows me to use a somewhat older model than I could for the teenaged Supergirl... but I'm still not a huge fan of the casting here. Ah, well.

Costuming from scratch, ditto the rooftop she's standing, the background is a photo of New York with some alterations. The sky and easter egg I made in 3D in Bryce.

Enjoy!

My version of Marvel Boy. I couldn't think of any "proper" costume that was sufficiently distinctive to stick out from all the cool stuff other people have come up with, so I ended up going with the Jack Knight Starman option: t-shirt, jeans and jacket with some elements specific to the character (logo and bracers). There y'go, now you can all go and vote for someone else's version.

Winterhawk signed up for C2F's XMas theme day, where artists are randomly selected to do request pics for another artist. Traditionally, these are manips of the artist making the request, but Hawk requested a pic of one of his favourite characters instead. (Apparently being manipped into Wonder Woman wasn't good enough for him.) I got picked as Hawk's Secret Santa, and this is my gift for him. Since Hawk is still primarily an HMorpher, I thought it was appropriate to post it here too so that everyone could go and lavish me with praise.

In case anyone wants a story behind this pic, my theory is that Blink's latest reality-saving mission is to deliver that Cabbage Patch Winterhawk doll under some poor sap's Christmas tree.

[EDIT: *sigh* Oops, I forgot to cater to BB's obsession. It's Sylvia Kaczmarek.]

My first post here in about 9 months or so... This is Dazzler in her New Excalibur costume. I wanted to do something involving power effects, and she seemed a good candidate. Body from Daz 3D, face collaged together from a variety of photos, costume and power effects from scratch.

The lighting on the face is wrong. I know this. I don't care enough to fix it. Thank you.
