Wanted to use a Nasa-style font on this but when skewed it proved pretty hard to read. Ditto all my space-age, techno and stencil fonts, so I settled on Yu Gothic.

Original photo of spaceship Discovery 1 found on The 2001 Archive. (https://2001archive.com/)

Season's greetings all. Christmas is a time for - ghost stories! And it looks like the one my favourite girl detective has found is about to go interactive.

Cover for a manga that does not exist. And given how long it took me to complete just this, never will!

The concept came after casually browsing the managa shelves at a big comics store for memorable titles, then altering them slightly and trying to figure out what it would be about.

Thus the misadventures of an mostly female firm supplyng water coolers and bottled water, with a sideline in industrial espionage / crime fighting / saving the world from alien invasion.

Another title I'm considering is Black Butter. (It's a tough one!)

Alternative title: Requiem Pour Le Meilleur Ami D'un Tueur De Vampires.*

Inspired by the Jean Rollin film of similar (but shorter) title, and developed as a cover for an imaginary angst-ridden subtext heavy fan fiction piece like those popular back when the World Wide Web was young and I was too.

*Google French for: Requiem For A Vampire Slayer's Best Friend.

I really wanted a more dramatic expression on Gabby's face, but after going through loads of photo reference, this was the best I could find to fit the pose. Just pretend she's approaching blackout here.

Not sure if The 4D Man counts as a horror film, but the original poster promised seeing him turn people to dust, which is pretty horrible.

It's been a long time coming (I started sketching this out in May last year) but here is the cover for the 3rd issue non-existent cross-over comic Croft & Dinkley. (Probably the last in the series unless I have another of my funny turns.)

To mark 50 years since the first Dalek glided across a TV screen, (and just in time for Christmas!) a special commemorative Barbie doll.

Affectionate celebration of two modern icons - or sarcastic comment on the milking of the collectables market? That's entirely up to you.

Originally inspired by a scene in one of the official fan-service spin-off mangas. The computer desktop format was done to re-imagine the plot leading to the girls' predicament and to redefine the characters as being their late teens.

Still haven't finished my 'Christmas themed' idea for last year, maybe by this December.

In the meantime, here's one thing I have finished in a long time. It's supposed to be Asuka Langley from the Evangelion anime/manga realm, falling victim to a practical joke.

Appropriately, the base font for the caption is called Ill Omen. (The girl has a fierce temper and combat training!)

This is an updated version of my previous post. I lightened up the shading on the face in response to a couple of comments.

(For some reason I couldn't update the picture in the original post, only the text, so I deleted the whole thing and reposted.)

The poster forming the backdrop here caused a furore earlier this year when it appeared on London Underground stations. Cries of sexism, objectification of women and psychological manipulation through body image led to its withdrawal. But not before a certain porcelain-skinned minx had taken issue with it herself.

Harley was painted as my first attempt to get to grips with Corel Painter Essentials 5. The poster was scanned from a newspaper article and manipulated in Corel PaintShop Pro X7, which was also used to assemble and size the final composite. Harley's apparent bad hair day is purely down to my inexperience and in no way due to a lack of proper shampoo and conditioning on her part.

'Weapon H emerges from a tank of eveantium electrolyte, & reveals her recent enhancements.'

A knowing post-modern homage to comics culture iconography. And an excuse to get the cheerleader naked.

What if the dancer with the buxom tentacles hadn't dropped out of the picture so early on? Would she have resented the presence of Jabba's new plaything? Given the big fat slob's reputation for redundancy pay offs - big time!

Ink on cartridge paper.

One from the archives. Back in the last century, before the Internet and even before desk-top publishing, fans had to share their interests on paper. This was how fanzine editors liked their illustrations done back then - compatible with the cheapest possible printing processes!

Coloured version of a previous posting.

I've been trying on and off for years to find a way to electronically apply some sort of colour wash to my drawings. Something that would add colour without destroying the original shading. Too early to tell what the limitations are here, but maybe, just maybe...

For anyone interested this was done as follows.
Scanned drawing contrast adjusted for best definition.
New raster layer added on top with blend mode = multiply.
Colours painted on this layer with soft-edged brush.
Once fully painted, layer duplicated twice.
Lowest layer (directly above drawing) blend mode set to colour.
Next layer up blend mode set to burn.
Top layer blend mode set to multiply.
Transparency of various layers tweaked to give best effect.
(Tests were done along the way when selecting colours to paint with to avoid undesirable results.)

Any other techniques, anyone?
