Inspired by DarqueImages and B, I decided to push the flippin' envelope a little further myself and send these pre-superhero Marvel monsters from the covers of Tales to Astonish 3, 9 and 13 out on tour.

too?  So here's Groo #28 flipped.

This time, the very iconic cover from Superman #17 ('42) gets flipped. Mostly I replaced the background with elements from Captain America #22 although the "Giant Size" logo comes from Giant Size Captain America #1 ('75)

This time it's Green Lantern/Green Arrow #76. Again, I've respectfully kept Neal Adams great art intact. Just adding new word balloons and logos and a little color replacement.

This one's for the cover flip challenge
I chose Ghost Rider #68 to have a little fun with. I really didn't mess with Bob Budiansky's cover art too much, just added a few buttons on the shirt and a  cowboy hat (from the Gil Kane collection) on the ground. I did change the logos, text boxes and the color of the boots and gloves. I also added some word balloons and musical notes. All quick and easy stuff.

I have nothing against gays or cowboys or gay cowboys. I am merely having fun taking a little jab at '03 Rawhide Kid editor Axel Alonso (now Marvel's Editor-in-Chief's)  decision to mess with the Kid's (then) 46 yr history.

Trying to exploit the template grid into a comic page style to pay tribute to some of the very talented and funny folk at MAD from those early and middle years.
I can't believe nobody had mentioned John Severin yet in their Influence Maps, even in people they didn't include!

Matthew M. Laskowski AKA fox-orion has created something called an Influence Map.
The idea is a very simple one: you take a 1462 H x 1000 W and divide it into a grid. You then fill those grids with 3x3, 2x2, 2x1 and 1x1 tiles containing images of whatever has inspired you as an artist. Whatever you want... photos, paintings, comics, your art, someone else's art, 3D, vector, whatever... hell, if you wanna go off the grid, go nuts!
I suggested this as a monthly challenge in the forums and all I hear is crickets chirping. Everybody SEZ they want challenges but do they really? I say yr all little be-yotches who won't step up! I'm openly challenging all members, mods and lurkers to step up and do one... if you think it's too hard, it's not... if you think it's too easy you'll find it's not that either. I've opened my brain and showed you what spilled out... let's see what's in your head!
You can be sure I'll be doing this little exercise again in the future.

Some of my favorite toons..
Thought I'd try an experiment to see if I'd still feel like I didn't have enough spaces... yup, still not enough I did use different sized tiles underlapping the grid to define groups of films by individuals or organizations as the 2x2 blocks (4 squares) used for Bakshi, Pixar and Disney, all of whom have larger bodies of work worth checking out too. Long 3 x 1 blocks used for Laloux, Miyazaki and Ohtomo, and just two (2x1) for Linklater. There's 2 shorts that made the list...

My odd thought process here: WHAT IF Kirby had not done Thor in those early years but rather it was done by Al Williamson and Frank Frazetta. I would imagine it would've been a very different type of book with a different look, feel and type of story. This is the sort of approach I imagine they'd take.
I just finished the book Al Williamson Hidden Lands. If you aren't familiar with Williamson's work from the 50's, check it out... you'll be blown away by the quality.

Just finished reading Kirby, King of Comics by Mark Evanier. It was great inspiration for my latest...
it's pure Jack Kirby tribute... all hail the King!
This is based on an old Kirby poster. I got it all wrong but Jack's version kicks butt!  I always had a special fascination for it since I first saw it in an ad in a Marvel comic when I was around 9 or 10. Of course, if I'd taken a magnifier to that ad (I hadn't), I would've been surprised to see it was Herb Trimpe's poster because everything about it screamed Kirby. According to Evanier (in Kirby, King of Comics),  that poster had been one of "several last straws" at Marvel for Jack. Marvel had asked Kirby to design posters of their characters and so Kirby submitted 8 excellent pieces and in a rare moment, inked them himself. Apparently, some editors at Marvel decided the 4 of the posters had too much Kirby in them and rejected them, not paying Jack for the work on those. I'm sure that must've been insulting enough to Jack before they had Trimpe trace Jack's rejected piece while adding a more Trimpe styled face. Again, Jack was not paid. This was how Jack was treated in the house he built.

2 M4's with karate pants, ghost agent sweater and pirate shirt, posed in DS3 and rendered in Bryce. Leader's daddy longlegs tripod modeled in Hexagon, all other elements made in Bryce. Compositing and postwork in PS.

From Left to Right: SHIELD agents Dum Dum Dugan, Nick Fury and the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
A couple of years ago, I had attempted to do a Nick Fury pic with a nod to artist Jim Steranko thrown in. In the end, I don't think it did a terribly effective job at paying tribute to Nick Fury or Steranko or showcasing my skills either. So... in an attempt to draw inspiration from my own lack of inspiration, I decided to see if I couldn't do a little better job on the subject (which isn't saying much).
On a technical note, 2 M4's and one V4 used, bodysuits for everyone, Ghost Agent harness, M4 Witch Hunter boots, V4 Biker boots and various belts from different sets. I did a fair amount of original modeling here... Shield logos modeled and rendered in Bryce (Everything else rendered in DS3). I also built a number of items in Hexagon like Dum Dum's derby and 'stache, holsters, arm and wrist bracers and all firearm.
Updated: Bouncier boobs (Contessa only) and a few other more modest upgrades

Decided to see if I couldn't dust off this old piece of mine and see if I couldn't make it look a little better. Same models (M3's), scene, lights, props, textures, etc.. The only thing I changed in the render file was the direction and color of GL's eyes. However, I did tweak a couple of render settings and play around in Photoshop a bit.

This one's for Miss Vee. Sorry it took so long to get around to it, Vee but because it did, I wanted to do something special. It's been so long, I can't even remember the last time I tried to draw a full color scene but it's certainly the first time I attempted to do it completely digitally (no pencil and paper). I know... I should probably stick to 3D!

The days of the dragon had long since passed. Most folks thought of dragons as creatures of myth but the dragons were real and so was their importance to this world. It had been a long time since there had been news of a juvenile dragon as the mature dragons had such long lives and knew well how to remain hidden from man. A secret order of temple priests would provide sanctuary for the young dragon until it matured enough to fend for itself, if it could be retrieved. Fate had brought together the unlikely trio of a wandering monk, a warrior princess and an ex-samurai mercenary to deliver the dragon to them. Unfortunately, the evil lord Hakuyashi, believing it's blood will grant him a dragon's lifespan and mystical powers, has sent his army to acquire the dragon by any means necessary...

Yup... I thought I was done doing Ditko tributes myself but when my creative well's run dry again, I turn to the great master for inspiration.
A lot of folks probably missed this one... it only ran 4 issues, Paul Levitz writing was pretty sharp on this tale of a man who trades his soul to a demon lord in exchange for ultimate combat skills so that he can get revenge on the baroness who enslaved him as a child but feels cheated when he extracts no joy from his vengeful triumphs and decides to battle his way down through the underworld to get his soul back. Pencils were by Steve Ditko and inks by Wally Wood, each geniuses in their own right and complimented each other here in a way that made them even better!
