Well, that Abrams fellow said in a short interview that he wanted an american monster (although he was inspired by the japanese monster flicks). Also, judging from the teaser poster, it appears as if the monster is amphibeous, huge and have claws.
Some people hoped it would be a Ctulhu movie, but I doubt that. Although that would fit the description and was made by an american, I think they are going with something new.
The low budget is a bit worrying though. So expect a big handpuppet thingy as the moster.
Or maybe they will borrow a page from Lost and never show it.
