Adding colors: Initial lay-in to work-up. In this instance I am painting from back to front. This is an old Old Masters technique and a favorite of Ms Redd's good friend loish.
Begin with a sepia or umber for your base (as human skin is brown) and simply work up to the lighter colors. As you can see with even a just few steps, the figure is already beginning to look sculptural.
