Hey do any of you cats do much commision ie: paid work? I've only done a few for pretty short money, but I'm new to it so I'm okay w/ that. I'm just curious what other people charge, and also w/ the legal issues regarding licenced characters. Thanks for any input you have! -Leif.
Sorry... I can't really help you on this. The commisions I have done are normally original characters... but the way I look at it is that you are getting paid for your time not the character itself. However, I am sure that the comic companies would think different. I charge anywhere from $150 - $500 for my freelance stuff. (not all manips, of course)

I think Shade does commission work on Ebay. I remember him saying something about charging like 35 for a normal notebook paper sized drawing. JustinBLong might be able to tell ya.
I'm not sure myself..I've been asked to do hero portraits for people but never for profit. I know that if I were Marvel or DC and someone was peddlin my characters for profit and not giving me my fair share I'd be pissed. So I'd investigate a little further before you dive in.

I used to chrage anywhere from 15 - 60 bucks per picture, but that was in the early 1990's, at the time it never occured to me not to draw who ever the client asked for. Considering it is a private transaction I do not see a problem with drawing known characters. after all, The pro's do it on a commision basis all the time both online and at conventions.

It depends also on if you're selling the original work or not. I do quite a few things for bands and what not around town, and if they don't want the original art, I bump a considerable amount of the cost off. For example I recently did a poster I charged 100 for, but would've charged around 300 if he wanted the original illustration (which I still have).
