Okay, so I'm in my friend's comic book store today and on the Marvel rack is a miniseries title called Marvel Zombies. Now first of all, why in the Hell, Michigan would I want to buy a comic book about my favorite superheroes as reanimated corpses? The very thought sickens me. I know it's irrational but ever since I saw Michael Jackson's Thriller as a child, I've had an almost paralyzing fear of zombies. [And Michael Jackson, but that's more understandable.] But the cover was what repulsed me the most! They've apparantly been recreating classic covers with the characters as the undead and this one was of >SHUDDER!< Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19, the wedding issue! All the background heroes and villians were all zombied up and it looked like zombie Spidey had been eating Mary Jane! I just wanna go up to the guy that drew that and ask him "How do you sleep at night?" I know they're just fictional characters but I never saw what the appeal of zombie and horror movies and that whole Gothy culture of death was. Guess I was just born too late or too early or something. Anyway, thanks for letting me rant and explain why I stick with the classic stuff. Ya know, before the sickos started running the asylum around the turn of the century.

Apparently there is enough of a market for Zombies these days, Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Shawn of theDead, 28 days later, Resident Evil Etc. to merit Marvel creating the Zombies MF. Personaly I think it is a neat Idea to play around with. I don't see why you are upset, it is only a mini series. It is just Marvels way of getting on the Fad band wagon. If you look though Marvel and DC as well you will see that they all trie to workin the current fad.

Fear of zombies huh?
Unlucky for you that it's Zombie Marvel May Mania Month!

I will agree that there is a lot of rubbish comics out there today, and they are more expensive. So vote with your credit card.

My comic store is pretty annoyed with me because the past few years I have changed my reserved titles every month. I only read comics where I enjoy both the writer and artist.

Just cancelled Red Sonja because every story was the same.
Just picked up Ms Marvel because it appeals to the teeange boy in me. Will also give the new Wonder Woman a try.

If you want a great adventure pick up TPBs of The Losers. It's concluded now (as it was meant to) but it's 'O for Awesome!'

Without a doubt the quality of comics have been slipping, in general. Still, there are good issues coming out every now and again. Trougle is finding them among all the trash.
Personally, I blame it on the writers and the lack of strong editors who take charge of the titles. And the lack of long-term planning.
I absolutely hate, hate, HATE all those pesky 'alternate' versions/worlds/characters that fill the comicbook stores these days.
Zombies however, I like! Especially when they go boom. (I want a shotgun for x-mas. Please Mr.Santa!)

No doubt about it, zombies may be the most fun group of horror villians. You just can't beat them for pure reckless violence. They are already dead, so no guilt killing spree fun is the call of the day. Don't like zombies? Then grab a bat and beat one into mash... See now, wasn't that fun?

As far as quality goes, the big publishers are too scared to do anything new or cutting edge, so seeing a big push of interesting books isn't too likely. They have to protect those golden geese. I look to alternative publishers, and TPBs. I find more satisfying reads that way.

Zombies eh? woo :bored look:

I'm sorry, but I don't see how zombies can be something to be scared of or even disgusted with. Woo I'm a zombie, woo I walk super slow and wanna eat a brain. Woo (utoh, damn I hate when my nutz fall off like that).. So. um..... uhhhhhh.... oh zombies, yeah, ok.

I guess it has to be a difference in upbringing. I don't have a clue what you watched as a child or what your parents kept you from watching. I however was told that before I was born, my mother used to watch a show called Night Gallery. And that she'd be curled up in the corner all shaky like. But she liked it. My mother liked to be scared. So we move on to every Halloween we were forced to watch Michael Myers kill people at .02 mph. Cmon, what's scary about that? He moves like he was a bride on her wedding day and no matter how much a groom/victim runs. He still gets the knife in! Plz people that's freakin hilarious.

Take Poltergeist for instance. That movie was boring till the ghosts started jumpin out the walls and grabbin girlie's boobies and stuff! I swear it was like watching kids play tag. The mom all runnin down the hall in nothin but a tshirt, and then a coffin pops up, and a skeleton dood falls all over her, grabbin various fun places before he's committed to beaten dust

Jason, I don't care how much TNT you bring, that boy just don't quit. He's like that damn Energizer Bunny.

The Shining. Ok ok, so I got a picture somewhere around here of my blood father holding an axe, he has a widows peak, and grizzled facial hair action. Honest to god, he looked like Jack Nicholson's twin. Now imagine me, and my 2 sisters running around the house as lil lil kids yellin "REDRUM" and "WENDY!!! GIMME THE BAT!!!!

Freddie, come on, that's a straight up comedy. I refuse to explain this one.

Evil Dead 1 & 2. Ok so a demon tries to climb out the basement, so dood jumps on the trap door and an eyeball pops out, flies across the room, and screamin girl swallows it!
Not to mention dood cuts his hand off and his hand gives him the finger! And for the slow people in the back who haven't figured it out yet, Army of Darkness is Evil Dead 3.

Ok, now for those who insist that there HAS to be a movie that scared me. When I was a kid, the Exorcist scared the hell out of me. Now it just disgusts me. Honestly tho, after 20 years of thinking about it, I think it actually put the fear of god in me. Which leads me into another movie I found scary, The Seventh Sign.

So because I see horror differently, does that make me a sicko?

the exorcist? OMG! I snuck up and watched that one when I was just a kid. And lauched so hard I woke up my sister. When her head spins around? the precision vomiting? now that's plain funny. Maybe the fact that I have never, ever believed in God made it impossible for me to take that stuff seriously. But the dead comming back to (un)life? And people eating each other? (in the non porno way.) That kind of worked. But mostly, I like the comedy factor in zombie movies. And not all zombie movies have slow moving zombies. I do agree with the M. Myers/freddy/jason critique though.
And ghost don't do it for me either... what are they gonna do? Yell boo really loud? Leave ecto-plasma on your floor?
As for turning marvel heroes into zombies? why bother? most of those characters are pretty much dead already. Come up with something new, please.

Actually, I think I remember reading in wizard or something, that the "super-human" zombies in the movie 28 days later partially inspired the marvel zomie idea. Apparently, there was an issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four that had super-hero-zombies, and the idea was so popular, it got a spin-off. I think it sounds like fun....Peter Parker turning into a zombie and eating MJ and Aunt May??....HAHA!!! That sounds great! One sequence I saw had zombie Hulk fighting with some other "heroes" over who got to eat Magneto....they ended up literally pulling Magneto apart, and Hulk had to make do with just a drumstick

This goes back a while and is not zombie related;

I stopped reading Marvel comics in the "Jim Shooter" era, DC comics in the "Death of Superman" era, and Vertigo in the "Oh my god I got two kids to pay for" era.

Friends still direct me to exceptional work when it arises, and I'll read darn near anything by Frank Miller; but for the most part, I agree with Biohaz_Daddy when he stated "I look to alternative publishers, and TPBs. I find more satisfying reads that way". Even though the anticipation of the next issue is missing.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. First off, I just want y'all to know that I'm not a total pussy when it comes to the undead. Hey, I've gotten and beaten all the Resident Evil games. [The movies stunk out loud though.] And I was just trying to say that titles/series like this make me think comics have passed me by. I'm all for shaking things up a bit but turning my favorite superheroes into soulless flesh eating monsters that can't be killed goes too freaking far! I guess I just look at these characters as symbols of happiness from my less-than-ideal youth and turning them into zombies and having them eat their loved ones (Darumma, you're one sick monkey, man!) seems to bastardize my lost childhood. (There I go, being overly sentimental again. God, I'm such a girl sometimes!) Anyway, thanks, for giving me a forum in which to express my opinions at. Finally, I'm not saying such horror comics shouldn't be published since there is obviously a market for them. Just put them in the back room and up on the top shelves with the rest of the (not as nausiating) pornography! That's what I'd do at my comic book shop... if I had one.

MF, I just happened to think of a zombie movie, which of all the zombie/hacker/slasher movies I?ve seen since the 70?s, IMHO, is among, if not the best. It has a coherent plot, humor (not Scary Movie humor), and it doesn't have gore merely for gores sake.

Shaun of the Dead

Hey you want funny, then you always got these:-

They're back...They're Hungry...And they're NOT vegetarian.

When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.

Just when you thought it was safe to be dead.

In this first sequel to The Return of the Living Dead, a group of kids discover one of the drums containing a rotting corpse and release the 2-4-5 Trioxen gas into the air, causing the dead to once again rise from the grave and seek out brains.

I definitely agree with you Dragondack, those are among my favorite; but there's something about wailing away on a zombie barkeep in time with Queens' "Don't Stop Me Now" playing on the juke box, that makes me laugh with tears in my eyes. But... maybe that's just me.

This is a fun thread! I'm not familiar with the marvel zombies and I doubt I'll ever read one (I stopped collecting comics when my second child was born. It was a simple matter of economics). I pick up the occasional comic or trade paperback, but it's got to be something really fantastic.

But, of all horror genres, I've always been most disturbed by zombie movies. It wasn't the horror. It wasn't the gore. It was the nihilist vision of the world they presented. If you take a zombie movie to it's ultimate conclusion, the world gets overrun by zombies until there are no humans left and there's really no hope or future for mankind.

Sure, Jason is the killer energizer bunny, but he can't de-populate the world all by himself. Zombies just keep on coming and coming and making more and more of them. The image or thought always leaves me feeling sad and empty.

Of course, this never stops me from missing a zombie movie when it comes out.

Night of the Living Dead, still one of the scariest movies ever. Shaun of the Dead, an absolute classic! And who can forget the best love line ever uttered in a movie:

"...Darling, I love you, and you've got to let me eat your brains!" (Return of the Living Dead)

Just a thought for you folks not buying comics anymore cuz you got kids and/or money's tight, check out your local library. I'm fortunate enough to have a library that aquires TPBs. It's been cool to check them out without having to be out...
