hey kids,

how's it going? well, as the title of this thread indicates,
tonight was the premiere of the new SCI-FI channel
series FLASH GORDON. I must say, a little slow at the
start, but it's quite entertaining. a little different, though.
Ming is not Oriental, people use time portals instead of
ships to go to Mongo and, according to TV GUIDE, Flash
is not Joe Hero all the time because a lot of times either
Dale or Aura rescues him. so, in all, this might be a fun
series to watch. any comments? peace.

I wasn't around for the 1950s TV show, and I didn't like the Movie... so, it is going to take some serious Kudos to get me to watch this series.

I'm quite a big Flash fan (did you know he was originally a polo player?) and was quite looking forward to the day he came back to our screens.

But this new show is complete and utter CRAP.

OK.. I have to take back what I said about the Flash Gordon movie... It is freaking AWESOME next to that pile of, how did Chilly put it, CRAP that I saw last night. Wow... I turned on the TV... there was some dude bleeding out of his eyes and I thought, "Wow... kickass... he is squirting out of his eyes" and then some girl waltzes in... shoots the bad dude, the friend Flash needs to find conveniently finds them and they escape without a hitch. YAWN... I still can't believe I wasted the next 35 minutes watching the ending. I guess I kept telling myself... "this HAS to get better"... yeah, no... it didn't.
If you need to watch TV on Wed. night... watch re-runs of Family Ties instead of this turd.

hey,

well, the woman who reviewed this says that it may be
slow-going at first, but to give it a few episodes to pick
up and it's actually a good show. I don't mind what I see
so far, though there are admittedly a few lame parts.

hey,

well, I certainly did not expect Oscar winning acting.
I highly doubt the creator decided "Oh yeah! This is
serious thought-provoking material!" it's based on a
1930-1940s serial and, of course, the show is shut-your-
mind-off-for-an-hour-and-enjoy fluff. I find it entertaining
and, in lieu of an actual movie, this is fun mind candy.
don't like it, don't watch, though according to Sci-Fi
watchers it is like #5, #7 with the 18-40ish male crowd.

No one ever said anything about Thought Provoking. But it would be nice if the show was half way entertaining. The women on the show aren't even pretty enough for this to be an hour of "fluff". It really is the crappiest show I have seen in a long time. And that is too bad.
So, like you said... Don't Like it... don't watch it. Well, I will not be watching this series. The acting in this show makes Xena look Academy Award caliber.

hmmmm, reading this you'd almost think that Neilrok had been paid to promote the show...

No, I won't be watching it again either after the pilot, and I'm someone who has perservered with some terrible shows before.

I tried the 2nd episode on the theory that it might get better. I was wrong. Bad acting, bad dialog, bad plot, just bad bad bad. Not watching it again.

Well, I have a question: Which of the characters is Ming the Merciless? The reason I ask is because the guy they have portraying Ming now reminds me of an older and darker version of Flash Gordon.

And Ming the Merciless was the absolute head-honcho of Mongo and all of its moons, not some water baron who reminds me of a sadistic J.R. Ewing minus the ten-gallon hat.

Add that to the fact that he bears NO physical resemblance whatsoever to the comic book, movie or cartoon versions of Ming and you can see why I am confused.

Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless! Now there was a righteous villain if there ever was one.

That single sentence has more possibility than the whole pile'O'crap that is this show!

Hey! Jedi! Thanks for the compliment.

But seriously the only thing that show has going for it are the women! The woman who plays Dale Arden is cute, but the one who plays the bounty hunter is HOT!

Beyond the women, this show has no bright spot whatsoever.

With GATTLESTAR GALACTICA ending its phenomenal run and thr STARGATEs getting creaky, SCI-FI is looking for some space opera to replace it.
FLASH GORDON ain't it.
Like the Peter David mishandling of Supergirl, I think I'd be less critical of this if they'd simply used different names.
But they didn't.
They took THE iconic SF comic strip (all bow in the direction of ALex Raymond) and THE iconic movie serial...... and made something that makes the Gil Gerard BUCK ROGERS lookthoughtful.
What were they thinking with the casting that guy as Ming? Not only is he a WASP blondie with a full head of hair, HE'S SHORT!!!!!!!!!!
And if the paranoid nut is supposed to be Zarkov, why the hell not actually say his name?!?!?!?!?!?!

Two good things to say--
(1) Ming's solution to the problem of the father stealing water for his dying child-- good, disturbing, and true to character.
(2) The gratuitous nude scene of whatsernsame giving herself an oil bath in Flash's back yard-- I'm all for gratutious nudity. And using the Roman custom of bathing in oil makes sense for a culture that's stuck in a water shortage.

I hate to admit that I have seen the first three episodes of this show. I kept thinking that this has got to get better. I don't know why I wasted my time. THIS SHOW SUCKS!! The women are cute but that is all the show has going for it. The acting, the scripts, the lack of space travel and or gadgets for Flash make this a horrible show.

I will not watch this show again.

hey,

WOW! I see the response to this show is overwhelming.
(or should I say UNDERwhelming? ) interesting that
COMICS2FILM said that it ranked in the Top 5 in Sci-Fi
shows. well, guess not. then again, the Sci-Fi Channel
does have some pretty lame stuff. so, to each his own.
I like it (sort of) and others don't. as the old TV show
sings "Different Strokes For Different Folks".

hey JR,

no worries. well, just read that FLASH might be
cancelled. apparently while the numbers are decent,
it's only above PAINKILLER JANE and other yanked
shows, plus purists are saying instead of doing a
series that showed respect to the comic, it simply,
as they say in Industryese, the producers "crapped
one out". well, I said it was entertaining, though
certainly nothing to write home about. so I doubt
I'll be particularly heartbroken if it's pulled.
maybe they'll do a GOOD one in the future.
