I was fooling about with this inflation calculator and noticed something interesting. Goods that cost 10 cents in 1938 (like comics) would cost 77 cents in 1985. I started collecting comics that year and I recall them being 75 with some titles still at 65. So in adjusted figures, comic actually got cheaper over the years (albeit thinner too). Now, using the same tool, something that cost 75 cents in 1985 should cost $1.48 in 2009. The cheapest comics today are $2.99 - more than double what inflation would cause!

And just think, gas cost $.10 cents in 1938... $1.20 in 1985... and $2.75 now. It even cost more to drive and get you over priced comics. Yet another reason to quit collecting.

As I understand it a lot of the European countries subsidize a large portion of their social programs through their gas tax.

One of the things to keep in mind about the cost of comics is that it's overall market has shrunk, so the per unit production costs have increased as a result. One more nail in the comic coffin.
