I challenged Billy
the weapon of choice is Same Base Picture/pictures, with the specific deadline of Saturday.

We still need some Judges, any volunteers?

OK so here it is the finally.
The rules were set by billy.
He decided on the same base pictures. He sent me the 9 following Base pictures.
1-Arkham
2-Ears
3-Hat
4-Hatter
5-Guy
6-Hands
7-Gun
8-Cup
9-Teeth
According to the rules that we agreed to both of us had to use a part from all Nine base pictures and nothing else. There were no other limitations on this Duel.

Ok, first of all, no pre-grovelling is allowed, Billy. You may grovel after the judging, but not before.
One Judges Gavel for you-

Now, for everyone reading this thread, it's only fair that they can view the contestants entries, so-
duel pic for billy---the mad hatter
Duel Picture- The Mad Hatter's revenge By Winterhawk

First, a few Duel Questions.
(Contestants, consider your answers carefully, and yes, you may use a LifeLine.)

#1-Who is this guy? He's the base for Billy's Joker, I know that...

#2-Who is this guy? Remember, you will be judged on your answers...

#3-The only rule point here was to use all of the images. Did you both do that? Neither of you mention it in your notes...

Those questions aside, I suppose I can take a swing at judging these entries. So, it's more or less however I feel about these, eh? I'll say two categories, Technical and Artistic.

Let's start with Billys Technical Review:

Technically, this image all started with the face, it's obvious, and I think he did a real good job integrating all the elements here. Billy still has problems with edges, but he's getting better. (Using the Burn Tool along the shadow edges, under his chin, for example, is pretty simple. The edges of the coffee cup would have been better if you had used the Eraser Tool with a soft brush, not a hard one.) The background has pixelation problems. There are several ways to "fix" that, each has it's drawbacks. I will say, the elements of the piece have been nicely integrated.

Now let's talk about Winterhawks Technical Review:

I like the integration in this one as well. The first four panels are especially good, the shadow on the cards in the Mad Hatters Hat, Arkham, the skin on Killer Croc. I also like the voice balloons, I found those to be more annoyingly difficult than they should be, when I made them, so he gets points for that. What font is that, BTW?
The final panel looks a little hasty, and the Jokers face edge needs work, but I'm gonna have to say, overall-

WInner-Defending Chef-Wintelhawk!

Billys Artistic Review:
Artistically, I think this really comes together, which makes me wonder if this wasn't created and then the Duel gauntlet thrown.
("Always use your own bat", as Hawkeye would say.) Still, so what? I think Billy's really caught the flavor of being outside Arkham, and the steaming coffee is a nice touch. Artisticall, you nailed it.

Winterhawks Artistic Review:

It's a little difficult to figure out that they are inside Arkham (I had to go reread the splash box). Maybe some iron bars, or barred windows? I kinda wish Croc and/or Joker was saying something. However, you did manage to tell a story, which is pretty cool. And the colors of the whole piece flow together.
So-
WInner-Tie!

Let's see what the other judges say...

ok, so here goes.

i'll start with billy's mad hatter: i have to say, i really like the creepiness in this piece. the hatter himself looks absolutely insane. i like his face, the way his eye bugs out at the viewer. the smoking pistol and steaming coffee go together nicely, but i think the hand holding the cup could do with a bit more edgework. plus, it looks like billy did an excellent job of making all the parts of the face the same color, which is very tricky indeed, so i think the hand could've been matched a bit better as well... i like the background, if i hadn't seen the base images provided for the duel, i would've had no idea that picture of arkham came from such a small line-art source.

moving on to winterhawk's piece, i do like the sequential page of artwork, like the page of a comic. technical execution of the manip is spot-on with the exception of two things. one, in the first panel, the image or arkham doesn't quite blend seamlessly with the lightning and the tree. two, the gun in the last panel seems a bit flat. however, the handmade backgrounds look fantastic, and all three villains look great. the entire page is engaging and holds my attention throughout the piece. i find myself wanting to know more of the story, which is a good thing.

overall, these are two very different pieces, each with its own strengths and weaknesses... both artists used all 9 of the base images (from what i can tell), both created very creepy scenarios. both images tell a story. but whereas billy's entry combined all the base images into one villain, and winterhawk used the base images to bring three to life, i've decided to cast my vote for winterhawk. great job by both artists, it's a privilege for me to be able to critique such cool works of art.

winner: the mad hatter's revenge by winterhawk

now, this is gonna sound funny...

im happy i lost....i knew i would, but i'm also happy. the judges have shown me that even what i think is my worst peices have a proverbial silver lining in at least a thing or two that someone will like...that and i just got to compete with one of my favorite artists and fellow manipper(not to mention good friend,)WINTERHAWK. congrats, buddy...you deserve it.

kudos to you, brother...

Re: Billy and Winterhawk Challenge Judging
Ok, chiming in with my judgment.

Billy's submission:

I think he chose a real interesting set-up for his submission in terms of character composition. Nicely done. It makes me think that Hatter somehow escaped but the crazy bastard still has time for tea, even during a heated escape attempt. :)

You successfully incorporated all of the base images into an interesting and effective collage.

A few tiny flaws like the edges on the Hatter's collar but nothing serious.

Good work!

Winterhawk's submission:

Very neat setup! Sequential pages are not easy to do and good sequentials are even harder to do!

You safely and successfully incorporated all the base images but also managed to tell a short story. Very good work. The integration of the base images were done very nicely. Be proud. :)

Judgment: I'd have to give a very close edge win to Winterhawk, only because he tackled a sequential page, which is slightly harder to do than a pinup image.

Good work, both of you!
