I was expecting a crappy movie, with crappy casting, and walked away pleasantly surprised.

Superman Returns is a damn good movie that takes the characters from the Christopher Reeves movies (Brandon Routh does a pretty spot on impersonation for the first half of the flick) and takes them in a serious direction. If you are a Superman fan, you will like this movie.

For the most part, I have to agree. He does a great job paying homage to the original films, down to using the same style on the credits. And I came out liking Routh a whole lot more than I did going in, although he still looks too lanky, especially with the new costume design. Overall, I thought it was pretty solid, it even made me laugh several times.

This movie is craptacular. It was only marginally better than Catwoman. Routh can't act and it is proven in the miniscule ammount of speaking lines he has. The only monolouge he has in the movie is word for word from Marlon Brando. I can't believe I wasted 2 and one-half hours of my life. A 1 out of 10.

My review of "Superman Returns": After a brief message catching people up to date, we are treated to a recreation of Kryton eploding and Kal-El's journey through the cosmos as familiar-looking credits roll and John William's majestic music plays... and I am 7 years old again. Then we land on Earth and it's all downhill from there. Kevin Spacey's version of Lex Luthor is equal parts Gene Hackman's egomaniacal genius and the murderous sadist from the comic books. Parker Posey's Kitty Kowalski won't make anyone forget Miss Tessmaucher and Luthor's generic thugs can't even begin to hold a candle to Ned Beatty's groveling bumbling Otis. It does makes good use of cameos by Noel Neill (Lois Lane from the 1950's TV series) as the dying widow who leaves Lex all her money and Jack Larsen (Jimmy Olsen from the TV show) as Bo the Bartender. The only thing that irked me more than the movie's blatant ripping off of the 1978 original [from line for line dialogue to retooling Luthor's 'real estate' scheme into creating a new continent from crystals pilfered from the Fortress of Solitude] was the addition to the cast of Lois Lane's ugly sickly little bastard. (I don't even care what the kid's name is, all I know is that it doesn't begin with 'L' like it should.) But here's the best part... SPOILER TIME!!! His daddy isn't Richard White, Perry's nephew well played by James Mardsen, Cyclops from the X-Men movies,... Congratulations, Supes! It's a boy!!! (Keep in mind the preceeding sentences were written by a child of divorce who has never coupled and hates other peoples kids.) After that, I ceased to care what the hell happened to anybody in this pic but, unfortunately, it looks like a sequel will be inevitable as the movie is expected to do boffo box office this weekend. In summation, this flick is to the original Christopher Reeve movies as Star Wars Episodes 1-3 is to the orignal trilogy: Infinately better special effects but lacking the charm and staying power of the original. Final grade = D On the plus side, I saw a cool preview for 'Spider-Man 3' before it...

Okay I missed the SpidermanIII trailer but I have seen one on the net!
As a whole movie I did kinda like it!
Routh did make a fairly good Big Blue!
Spacey did the maniacal Lex well enough.
Bosworth is quite a good looking Babe normally but no Lois Lane!

Why was the kid using an inhaler in the begining?

But of coarse the big question as always is why do the Hollywood boys always think that THEY should recreate something that has always worked on paper from the past?

They always think that they can do a better job than the original people that invented the characters!

GOD Hollywood stick to CANON!

I just saw it, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.

Parker Posey's character and acting like most things she is in would have been better with a different actress. Kevin Spacey did not too bad as Lex, could have been better but he definately didn't let the movie down at all. Kate bosworth was OK, similiar to Spacey, not a stand out performance and not a let down either.
The two biggest purprises was how much Routh reminded me of Reeve's in some of the scenes it was just uncanny. I think he really did a good job. Also James Marsden as Lois Lanes Hubby actually acted and did a good job of it.
The Special effects were well done and there was plenty of both story and action to keep me interested through out the film.
Plus that music is still playing thru my head as I type this.
I hope they make a sequel to this version of superman as I left wanting more (in a good way).

the first 35 minutes was spent listening to 2 jerks behind me comparing the movie to the Chris Reeve movies...they finally got tossed out. Then, the lady in the seat on my right started yakking on her cellphone. After 10 minutes, the man in front of her turned around, took her phone, and kept the battery. And don't get me started about the older gentleman on my left...talk about loud snores!!!

Until I get out from the hospital ( going in for a few minor, routine tests on Monday / 03 July 2006 ) I really can't comment on the WHOLE movie. The last 15 minutes were really interesting, though! I give that part 8 outta 10

First, I really enjoyed this film. Visually it was stunning. The effects were awesome!!! The flying was seamless. The story...welllll...it could have used some work. Brandon was an acceptable Clark/Supes. He has the look for it. It would have been nice to see a bit more of Clark as a reporter. How does he keep his job if he doesn't do anything. Kate Bosworth is a blonde! She doesn't look right as a brunette, but she did a fine job as Lois. No complaints from me. The kid...was there a kid? I've seen films with great kid actors, this wasn't one of them.

Spoilers: I know how Lois got that kid. If you saw the second movie, you should also know how she got that kid, but Lois doesn't know how she got that kid. Superman used his memory erasing kissing power to make her forget. Now how is she gonna explain to Richard why his son has super powers. I feel kind of sorry for Marsden. Every film he's in, his girl has the hots for another guy.

Even with it's flaws, I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. Not great, but not bad enough to kill the franchise.

I haven't seen it... and y'all have all been too wordy for me to read any of your posts... But it looks like the majority of you enjoyed it. Maybe that will be a good Pre-Independence Day movie. Not to mention I am not reading a thing because I am sure there are some Spoilers in it... Like Magneto looses all his powers. OH... wrong movie....

I have yet to see it, myself. Spoiler wize, the commercials I saw beat all of you to it. Just from watching commercials I gathered half the damn story. I still plan on seeing it and he's right. the general opinion seems to be it's decent.

By the looks of it you either love it or hate it, me? I?m in between. I was hoping for a cool evil lex but he?s still after the land thing like in the first. As for the acting and what not, no major complaints, Brandon Routh fits just right for Christopher Reeve, could have cast someone better for Lex as in looks but Spacey did act like Gene Hackman and Lex from the comics just right amount. Now as for the kid I'm going to say he's a metahuman not Superman's kid.

In one word here's what I think should happen for Superman Return 2 "Brainiac". And then for the 3rd, you'll never guess, SUPERGIRL. Sticking close to Superman/Batman #8-#13 but replace Darkside with Lex and no Batman, at this point. And then a Supergirl movie, oh yea.

Just want to add the little things I saw/heard like the kryptonite that Lex steals had the date 1978 (year the 1st Superman movie came out) Gotham heard on the news, the kid was wearing Aquaman pjs

I didn't read everyones comments on this thread... so I am sure someone has mentioned this... but I did get a kick out of the Superman #1 cover reference when he is holding the Mustang over his head. I laughed. The two people on either side of me looked at me like I was crazy. I guess I was the only one on my row that caught that.

Good show. I really enjoyed it. Just go see it.

I'm not that big of a superman fan to begin with but you have pretty much all summed it up into a big lump what I think. Spacey was a generic Lex, destroy something, hurt his womans feelings and make her feel dumb, get land. Lois was annoying and just a terrible portrayal of the role. As for the minor chars they did pretty good. I kinda enjoyed the double papers of Superman is dead/Superman lives. As for Superman, he was similar to Reeve I just didnt get the childhood vibe of him being super, I mean the effects did everything behind it. All in all it was decent, ill rank it a little better than catwoman but worse than hulk ... Which isnt very high on my list. The one part that really made me lose flavor in the movie was "Ooooh Lois kissed me now Im alive" ... Does every comic movie have to endup being a love story in the end cause the whole movie drew out the fact he was more concentrated on loving her than anything else...bad... Though the x-ray scan of her body to see if it was fatal was nifty

Wow Captain... you thought the Hulk was good? This thread just goes to show everyone's different tastes in comic movies. Kinda interesting. I really enjoyed Superman... and walked out of Hulk. So out of the three you (Captain) mentioned my order would be Hulk (Still have not seen the whole thing), Catwoman (Will never see again) and Superman Returns (I will most likely buy it and put it next to Superman). This almost sounds like it needs to stem off into it's own thread. Top... uhm... 5 favorite comicbook movies... or top ten... But I don't want to start...

That's my car!!! I'm restoring a 1967 Mustang Coupe. That one's in better shape than mine, but unless I saw it wrong, it's the same car.

And Captain...you're not alone. I liked Hulk, too. I got a real kick out of it when he was beating on the tanks and helicopters.

In the interest of doing the little people a favor. I thought I'd help by providing the perfect excuses for NOT seeing any of these movies. If interested, please contact me by mastercard or paypal. As always, it's my pleasure to be of service.

Catwoman - won't see it, refuse to see it, will die a horrible death in my own vomit if forced to see it. The interview with Halle that I saw was torture enough... "We're gonna call the character Selina Kyle, give her a whip, make her a jewel thief, rob bad clothing shops for a costume, but it's nothing like DC's Catwoman"

Batman movies then - Damn, that was a straight up Circus at 3am.

Batman movies now - It's all gone to hell since Tim Burton left.

Hulk - Saw it. Thought it was incredibly stupid to have him fight giant shitzu's and poodles. Not to mention the Hulk himself was so cgi-ish, they should've named the movie "Who framed the Green Roger Rabbit" I mean honestly, they should've just made the ENTIRE damn movie cgi.

DareDevil - I don't care what you say. It's physically impossible to do a backflip and land 10ft forward.

Elektra - Everybody's gothika/chinese and why doesn't that typhoid chick have a white face?

Fantastic Four - He was seriously gonna test a plant to learn about human dna? Dood, it's ok Einstein flunked a few classes too.

Dolf's Punisher - ........... I come in peace..... with a skull.......

Xmen 3, 2, 1 - For a movie that started out with problems. They are at least consistant in sticking to their bullsh!t.

The new Punisher - Hey, they killed John Travolta, those bastards! Or (in reference to punisher war journal) Dear Diary, today I'm gonna go kill somebody . And how come Mistique's mackin on Frankie?

Spiderman movies - Where's the nifty porn music when he's climbin the walls? And dammit, he's sposa have cartridges for webstuffs, not some genetically rearranged c^m shooters!

Ghost Rider - He only comes out at night? What happened to kickin ass in the name of Vengance?

WW - Just like Bruce Lee wasn't Chinese enough for Kung Fu. The only acceptable option is an American chick playing the part of a greek woman. And give her back her star panties, NOW!!!

Superman movies - Christopher Reeves did a passable tribute to George Reeves. Oh and by the way, I'd pick Jack Black over Margo Kidder for Lois, anyday. I mean seriously, she's straight wacked in the head!.....Gene Hackman wasn't a maniacal genius. He was a retard version of Lex. I want ruthlessness. So I vote we cast Julie Benz (Darla from Angel) as Lex next time!

Superman movie now - I have yet to see it, but the ones who hate it seem to give me this "They better get everything, right down to the last snot string from Jimmy Olsen's nutsack PERFECT, or I'm demanding my money back" kind of vibe.

- my 2?

Catwoman was an ok alternate universe kind of movie, until she did the 'Meow' thing during the robbery scene. I couldn't shower enough after watching it. The dead rubber cat thing on her head was annoying as well.

Hulk was good. I liked the cinematography and the overall theme. The CG was good. There is NO WAY on god's green earth they could have done that with a live actor! PERIOD. I will argue that point with anyone. Lou Ferigno looked cheesy enough in his getup back in the day. If I'm paying $8.50 to see a film, it better not have some overmuscled goon drenched in green paint.

I like the directors cut of Daredevil better than the theatrical version. It told a much better story. Oh the jump thing, It's a comic book movie. Frank Miller had people leaping about in impossible ways, why can't they do it in a film version. (Frank's cameo did kick a$$ though.)

Elektra, I haven't seen. Not sure I want too.

Fantastic Four. If you though the plant thing was implausible, you should see the Corman version. CRAPTASTIC!

Dolf/Punisher, I'll be putting that right next to my Steel DVD.

X-Men, 3 was the weakest of the trilogy. But I will proudly own them all.

Thomas Jane/Punisher, I own it and love it. The cinematography on that film was great. At least he didn't get the girl. I liked that bit. She threw it at him and he went, "Ah, no."

Spiderman, I've said it once and I'll say it again. How the hell could a poor high school kid afford to make webshooters? Where his lathe and other expensive equipment to manufacture such a device? It was nice in the quaint 60's era but now it is old and busted.

Ghost Rider, I can't wait to see it.

Superman I, I just bought it and watched it again for the first time since it came out in the theaters. (Yeah, I'm old.) I'd forgotten how much of Krypton was in the movie. It has a cheesyness factor to it, but that's part of it's charm. Is it high art? No, but it doesn't suck.

/rant
