The "taking you back" bug never left. It's a bug in most xoops powered sites, some more than others, and so far from my own research on the subject and reading their forums, there is no way to get ride of it. 
From what I found out, that occurs more or less depending on the browser, but that's a good point you mention about a relation between the Top Posters/Random Images and that bug. I shall look into that when I have some time.
