Confirming postings by director Jon Favreau, Marvel and Paramount announced that Iron Man is staking out a May 2, 2008, release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Favreau alluded to the date in a posting on his Iron Man MySpace.com site. The Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment film will be an adaptation of the Marvel Comics armored superhero. The project marks the first motion picture to be produced by Marvel under its alliance with the studio. Iron Man is the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment and also marks the first production under former Marvel Studios chief executive officer Avi Arad's newly launched production company, Avi Arad Productions. The film is expected to be financed through Marvel's $525 million revolving film-financing facility.
Considering Avi Arad's a blowhard and this article doesn't list the the name of the man to be in the iron suit, this may be good news to Iron Man fans

Tom Cruise? Are you kidding me... Iron Man should be a little bit of an intemidator... not a Ewok in a metal suit. That dude is so short... and has a short man complex... that he makes the director put him on a wood box when he does a kissing scene so that people think he is at least as tall as Nikky Kiddman. Short-little-still in the closet-no acting-believe the earth was created by aliens-brainwashing-ewok jackoff.

I don't know man. I can totally see Tony jump up and down on a couch screaming "I've totally got the hots for the Wasp! Yeah, Baby! Wooooo!"  At least when he's drunk. Which is pretty much all the time. Regardless...the movie will stink. Some dude in an high-tech armor? Too 80's. Too boring.

We like to go to used-bookstores, garage sales, etc; and buy up used copies of "Dianetics" and any of the "Battlefield Earth" series...wait until winter...and then use them to start fires in the fireplace. That's all they're good for...tinder. Mike says Johnny Depp for the part...I'd say good idea...but, David Tennant ( current Dr. Who ) is my choice.

During the early to mid-eighties, Tony Stark was styled after Timothy Dalton. He played the prince of the hawkmen in the "Flash Gordon" movie. He had dark hair, a mustache and was very sauve and charming. However, he is probably too old for the part today. Also, Alex Ross, in his "Marvels" limited series, modeled Tony Stark after Errol Flynn, the swashbuckling actor of the 30's and 40's (also a bad choice cuz he's ...well, dead)

Does it really matter who they cast as iron man?
75% of the movie it will be a cgi metal suit anyway.

You know who I heard was gonna play the lead in IM? Vince Vaughn! Yes, Mr. Aniston himself was also a possibility to play Tony. Hey, he's still a better choice than fellow Party Crasher Owen Wilson. Both he and brother Luke look like something I ate and dropped.
