Well, the first look at the five major characters from Watchmen has been released. Some look great, some are 'meh' and some are just awful.

No Dr. Manhattan yet though, I think he could be the deal-breaker for me.

They look like toss aways from a bad Batman movie.

I bet my soul some artists will start to do group shots based on these photos. Just like that:

I dunno. I may be the biggest Watchmen geek here and I have very high expectations (and big misgivings) about the movie. Kind of the same way I felt about LOTR, which I ended up loving (although someday I hope someone will actually make a movie of the book, ha ha).

SO..... Personally I think the Watchmen pics are great taken as a whole. Rorschach is dead on, and I actually like what they did with Ozymandias and Nite Owl. I mean, c'mon folks, the costumes for the X-Men and even Batman in the various movies have had to be made "realistic". If they had made Nite Owl look just like he did in the comic, everyone would have been saying "Adam West Batman all over again... yuck!"

Now I don't like what they did with Laurie, but maybe it'll grow on me. Her costume looked like something from Frederick's of Hollywood in the book.

And damn if the Comedian isn't just about letter perfect. I'm looking at the old dog-eared book right here in my sweaty hand...

The damn movie better be over 3 hours long, that's all I can say. If they cram this into a 2-hour shortened hacked up condensed mess (like Golden Compass) then I'll really be angry.

well, i won't be seeing it in the theaters, mainly because of the hit-or-miss attitude toward alan moore comics that hollywood has. i mean, i liked v for vendetta a little, but it just missed the point entirely, and THAT was by the matrix guys. yes this is by the guy behind '300', but again, that was an entirely different trope then 'Watchmen.'

i'm affraid their gonna action it up, and get rid of the whole chessgame aspect.

that and they changed the time era. i dunno how it will work in this day and age...

oh well. theirs my thoughts.

Nope, PC, wrong. The 1980's will be the setting. Read the Wikipedia article.

And Dar, there's no pix of Dr. Manhattan on the site, since he will be completely CG (like Gollum) and with a year of post production ahead, he probably hasn't even been completely designed yet.

YES!! I did mean to say something about that, the ship looks great.

And Jr, I would say that you need to stop whatever you're doing and read Watchmen immediately. I will send you my paperback copy if that's what it takes. But there are an awful lot of words along with the pictures....

My take on the costumes (If anyone really cares. )

Rorschach and the Comedian look amazing!!!

Alan Moore included a lot of commentary in Watchmen about the comics industry in the 80's. I read that Zack Snyder's trying to adapt some of the commentary to apply to comic book based movies. (Hence some of the changes to the costumes.)

- Nite Owl II: If the commentary adaptation is true Nite Owl would have been better served with a Spiderman or Superman Returns type costume using the feather motif for the silkscreen. Come on he's a 40+ yrs old fat guy trying to relive his glory days. Barring that they should use the foam material from the 80s Batman/Flash suits rather than the latex from Batman Begins.

- Silk Spectre: Too much Emma Peel/the Bride not enough silk like material. Did they even have rubber bodysuits like that in the 80s?

- Ozymandias: I dig the belt but think the breastplate and tunic should have been in the final costume...

Oh and so long as Dr. Manhattan's theme music isn't "Everybody Wang Chung tonight" i'll be happy.

I think Doc Manhattan's theme will be something by the Manhattan Transfer. Maybe "The Boy from New York City"....?

I was looking at the Nite Owl II pic again, and agree that this isn't the 40's kinda guy with a paunch look. Maybe this is a flashback to his lean/mean days.

I recall reading a film treatment for a prior adaptation of the film, thankfully dead, where Doc Manhattan gives Laurie super powers before he banishes himself to Mars. Her power was to throw energy spheres and her code name was going to be "Slingshot".

So whatever happens to the film, it can't be any worse than that...

A co-worker of mine showed me the trailer online today. It does look like an exceptional movie.

yes but remember, they tend to show the best bits in the trailer, so its not fair to the whole movie. and yes i saw it, and yes i thought it was well done with the exception of the skinny ass adrian vedte, and the overly batman-ish The Owl.

I was kinda "Meh" on the changes to the costumes but the trailer did impress me. I haven't read the TPB in a year but each scene had me going "Hey! That looks like..." comparing it to scenes in the book which is a very good thing.
