Daily Bugle: Captain America shot and killed

Living legend assassinated on steps of Federal Courthouse

By The Daily Bugle Staff

Earlier today, we reported on the attempted assassination of a former
superhero. We can now confirm that the victim has been identified as
Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America. Rogers was pronounced dead at
Mercy Hospital due to injuries suffered from multiple gunshot wounds
to the shoulder, chest and stomach.

Eyewitness reports claim that the initial bullet, tagging Rogers in
the shoulder, came from a sniper perched atop or in one of the
buildings adjacent to the Federal Courthouse. Several other shots
were fired during the ensuing commotion--hitting Rogers in the chest
and stomach--but witnesses fleeing the scene, as well as the U.S.
Marshals who were escorting Rogers, have stated there was only one
sniper shot fired.

The identity of the assassin(s), as well as the origin of the other
shots, have not yet been revealed. Agents from S.H.I.E.L.D., the FBI
and local police are working together on the investigation and have
begun combing the buildings in the area. A S.H.I.E.L.D. spokesperson
declined to comment on the shooting, and stressed that few details
regarding the investigation would be available while it's being
conducted.

Rogers, a veteran of World War II, thought lost during the close of
those hostilities, returned to action decades later and was
instrumental in the early days of the Avengers. He had been at the
forefront of American superheroics until recently when he openly and
violently opposed the U.S. government's Superhero Registration Act.
As Captain America, Rogers battled pro-Registration forces last week
in Manhattan until surrendering himself to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. He
was on his way to his arraignment when he was struck down earlier
today.

Rogers has never been married and has no known living relatives.

For more on the shooting, see Captain America #25.

Whatever... of course they will say later that they wanted everyone to think he was dead so "he died" at the hospital. I am tired of them killing people off and bringing them back. Stupid.

oh well. that's cap out of the way with. . .and just when i was starting to like him. i'm sure they will bring him back next year in a blaze of glory, or transfer his conciousness to another body or maybe it was his clone that was shot and he is now an underciver agent for shield or maybe it was the hulk who sniped him . . . . phhht. . .

the one thing about marvel is that nobody stays dead for long. this reminds me of DC years ago killing off the man of steel (which i was happy about) and then re-incarnating him a year later (which was really lame). i have the upmost respect for all involved in the comic book industry but i would be nice for them to make a decision and stick with it.

hello that was my first post that's my cherry popped now on with the show

He'll be back. If Jean Grey and Professor X can die 37 times a piece, then he'll be back.

And why does everyone act all suprised about Superman dying? It's not his first time either. Actually my gramps told me years ago that it was his 6th time.

It is all just part of the story... the hospital leaked that he died... but he isn't dead. He has gone underground. Just watch.

What about the grassy knoll? Did they figure out who was on the grassy knoll?
Was he in the Mafia?

My first thought on seeing this news item was "Oh, so Marvel is ripping off THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN a decade late?"

Over at ClassicMarvel.com Halo68 had this to say--
" "Now watch, in the next few months 4 new characters will emerge each claiming to be the real Cap intending to find his killers and bring them to justice. Each character will have abilities/powers that pertain somehow to the concept of the American Dream (hell, that could even be the name of one of the them), then slowly they will all be revealed to not be Cap, wait I am being handed a news flash here, excuse me. reads the copy, hmm, err.... It's been done, sorry, it's been done before,i thought i was on to something.

Yep It's another sad day in Comicbookland!?!

Quote:
Comic Book Hero Captain America Dies
Mar 7, 1:11 PM EST

The Associated Press
Captain America has undertaken his last mission ? at least for now.

The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported. On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-we aring character, created in 1941. Over the years, some 210 million copies of Captain America comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in 75 countries.

But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.

Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

The superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.

In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel is developing a Captain America movie

Always very sad when the comic companies do something stupid!

That would include buying other companies just to destory them comes in mind!

In 10 years they'll kill him off again. And it'll be on the news again. And everyone will act like it's the end of the world and comics are being stupid and the fat boys will get back together and then break up due to gastronaumical vibratory ethics. Move on please.......

Out of all the jacksticks in the marvel universe to kill, they sure picked the wrong one.

For some reason when I read this I pictured Billy sitting in a corner somewhere crying.

Yeah, the whole thing really smacked of the Michael Vaughn death in Season 5 of Alias, which of course was bogus.

And Alias only really ripped off Sherlock Holmes in his "death" at the Reichenbach Falls, as did X-Men during Fall of the Mutants.

It will be interesting to see how and when they bring the old soldier back though.

Re: Captain America Assassinated
Between this and the rest of the foolish things Marvel has done of late, the best that can be hoped for is the Beyonder/Scarlet Witch/Onslaught/Celestials takes pity and destroys/remakes times/rewrite history in an amazing comic event called Crisis of the Secret Mustant Wars.

Really as badly as the continuity of Marvel has been mangled since the money problems it had during the 90s to now, it would really make sense to pull a DC and start everything over again.

I would have thought Peter Parker would have been killed after telling the world he was Spiderman. But what superhero hasn?t died and came back? From what I know Superman has died, Green Arrow, Hal Jordan, Red Tornado, Aquaman, Donna Troy, Jason Todd (but he came back evil) I think Barry Allen is the only hero to die that hasn?t came back, he has made cameos now and then but never came back to stay

Cap dying is almost a tradition at Marvel. I wonder if the news outlets that covered this stunt were aware of this:

Captain America vol. 1 #443 Sep. '95 - Cap dies after his super-soldier serum gets corrupted. There is a whole issue without him, and issue #445 begins with his funeral (Bill Clinton is a pallbearer!). Two pages later - he's alive again.

Captain America vol. 1 #454 Aug. '96 - The long-running title is cancelled. Cap dies in battle with Onslaught, along with most of the Marvel Universe. He returns in Captain America vol. 3 #1 Jan. '98. (This is a "COLLECTOR'S ITEM 1st ISSUE" that today sells for less than cover price.)

Captain America vol. 3 #50 Feb. '02 - Cap is killed by a bomb, has a funeral, book gets cancelled. He returns in Captain America: Dead Man Running #1 Mar. '02. Captain America vol. 4 #1 Jun. '02 follows the mini-series.

Captain America vol. 4 #32 Dec. '04 - It's the final issue and Cap is dead on the cover. Inside he survives, but the book is still cancelled. Captain America vol. 5 #1 Jan. '05 appears the very next month. At this point, Marvel is just going through the motions.

Captain America vol. 5 #25 Apr. '07 - Cap is shot and killed. What is newsworthy here? The only surprising thing is that the next issue is not another #1 relaunch. In Civil War: The Initiative #1, also Apr. '07, it is revealed that Cap is still alive.
