So I guess a good place to start is with the last sketch I did. I've noticed over time that a new look has surfaced to my pencils. In conversation with Bio I came to understand it's not a new style, but a different technique. Either way, I noticed one technique seemed to be the one you all are familar with. This other one shows it's face when I feel in an artsy mood. By saying that.... I'm beginning to think that my interests are starting to wander slightly towards fantasy. So this was an attempt at the new technique on old ground.

I'd like to start out with my own personal critique. And from there see what anyone else has to say. So here we go.

Background.... Background, background, background :complain: I imagine that's one thing I might hear. And it's something I'm working toward. But at the moment all I see for Bat's is a gothic skyscrapin skyline. and nightness. Isn't that kind of old?
Also, something I've as yet to be able to pull off is a face on him that looks murderous without being evil. So at the moment he keeps looking young and a bit naive.
I don't know if some of you spotted it or not. There was an arm in between the capes. I was thinking of having him holding a batarang. Some time later I came back to it and the hand wouldn't cooperate. So I nixed it.

So, thoughts anyone?

first impressions on the picture were really good no major issue's. I don't really see a different style it is easily recognizable as a Thayne drawing to me and looks very similar to your body of work up to this point. As for a critique here you go I only see two problems with the image. 1 his bat ears and 2 his right arm.
Basically the left bat ear seems to be at a slightly different part of his head compared to the bat ear on the right also it appears to me to be at a slightly different angle.
Now his right arm. it seems to be missing completely. Batman didn't listen to Astar and Play safe. and doesn't have a limb.
the missing arm thing isn't even noticeable at first. but even if the arm was behind him it would effect the cape more and the shoulder would look different.

overall the picture is pretty good, ...It could use a background...but that is no big deal, it would be easy enough to add in a night sky when coloring..if it ever evolves that far.

I have to agree with Hawk on the critique, so I'll mention a couple of positives that he left out...

The cape is very strong. The drapery is realistic and the sweep of it dramatic. Also the neck and torso construction are very solid and straddle a nice place between comic and realist.

All in all a strong effort for a sketch.

Someone who's like a sister to me, recently had a birthday. I asked her what she wanted me to draw for her birthday and she asked for a portrait of her and her newborn baby girl. So I dug through her photo album and found 2 pictures I liked. I tried to stick to what I saw, but her father's jaw seems to cause problems for me.

So later I came back and picked a different photo of her. At the time I started having troubles again, I relied on what I remembered of her. From what she says, I nailed it.

A conceptart.org I found a thread called Concept Art 101. In it she gives assignments. Which calmed my need to draw. And set forth a goal to boot. So lesson #1 was to pick something in your room and draw it. Leave enough space to redraw it. But when you do, change it somehow. I don't care how you change it, just as long as you do. So here was my first attempt.

since Buffy thought the 1st one was cute, I had to go back and do the lesson again. In which case, I think this lesson is one of those you can constantly do over and over and over. So here's attempt #2.

Wanted to do something off to the side and dark-like. It looked too much like a guild wars deal so I lost interest.

hey that looks really cool. My only negative is the eyes look too far apart but the rest looks really cool.

That 'Guild Wars' dude does look really cool. The shading around his eyes is very well done. But what is that thing from your room that you drew?

It's a battery charger for my xbox 360 controller batteries. It'll charge 2 at a time and does it fairly fast.

So I got watching a behind the scenes interview for the upcoming movie Pathfinder. In it, the bad guy is a giant Icelandic freakin dude. The actor is the same guy who played Kurgen (the bad guy in Highlander). So while working, my brain ran away with itself and thought about what if Dracula was just a screwed up story based on something a normal human saw after witnessing one of their head choppin battles. Then I remembered that USA movie about Vlad Dracul. And my brain started working overtime when I got home. I'm not finished yet, of course, mainly because right now I'm picturing something between Underworld and Mr. Sinister.

The scan is really washed out, but it looks like a good preliminary design sketch.

that's why I said "quick idea". I didn't want to go too far with it before I got an opinion from Android. I don't feel I'm getting the boxer's face right. Nor the suit for the nun.

Are you using photographic reference? I think that for the nun that at least it would be essential.

Playing in photoshop. Getting comfortable with my tablet. Bio and Winterhawk both mentioned tracing over a photo during discussion about drawing real people and such. So I played with a photo of a chick with a really nice butt. It wasn't all that successful, so I dropped it and then got basically doing the same thing to my Spawn drawing. Figuring if it worked then I'd use it for something with Android.
