Figured I'd start a thread here, too.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Jim, aka OrcaDesignStudios. For a long time, I'd been focused entirely on 3D art, but I'm back now to doing mostly 2D stuff. Been drawing pretty much since I was born and I'm always looking for new techniques to try and new ways to improve.

A lot of my recent sketches have been done using Prismacolor markers. I recently picked up a couple sets and I use the sketches to get accustomed to their quirks.

My weapons of choice are 3H and 2H pencils for rough work, H or HB for finished pencils. I used to do all my roughs in non-photo blue, but I found that the Prismacolour markers didn't play well with npb pencil, so now the only time I go npb is if I'm scanning to colour digitally.

I'll start off my sketch thread with the oldest sketch I have: Darth Vader, from way back when I was 5 years old!

And now for something more recent...



This is actually an amalgam of four sketch pages. Didn't see the point of posting four separate images.

The Wonder Woman/Superman at the right was the rough sketch for a larger piece I'm about to start inking.

Nice sketches! Your first one is hilarious... gotta love the art of children. I wish I still had my childhood drawings.

And that is pretty funny... I had the same problem wth the blue pencils and markers. I thought it was just me.

Thanks guys. Batman is a favourite of mine to sketch when I want to practice body proportions/anatomy, because you can get away with such a minimalist head. Also, he's a cool character ;)

The thing with markers and npb pencil really pissed me off.

So Batman is your guinea pig. That's kewl. Mine is an original character named Firebird. If there's something I need to practice I used to try it on him.

Heading out to the con shortly, but here's a ballpoint pen sketch I did a couple years ago during a really awful lecture.

lookit...it's a super buff Yoda. lol

Back from the con. It was fun - got to chat with Cary Nord, which was cool. Poor guy was overloaded with sketch requests.

Anyway, here's another sketch page. A random collection of random randomness if there ever was such a thing. The shark & whales on the left were a test sketch for a piece I did for a book called Elementum Bestia. I actually kinda like this sketch better than the finished product, sadly.

Boink. Swamp Thing, sketched in gel pen on the back of a business card while waiting for clients to return phone calls...

Okay, time to update this thread. I still have a handful to scan, but I probably won't get around to that until Sunday. In the meantime, here's one from after work today. Something a little different for me -- an ink sketch, done with a brush pen. Tricky to get the hang of, but I like it so far.

And yes, I do have an odd fascination with Ewoks these days.

Decided I'd been neglecting this thread for two long, so here are a few newer addition, starting with Batman and Two-Face. This one I did for fun, but back when some guys at Newsarama were developing the Ultimate DC Universe, they liked the Two-Face idea and asked me to develop it further for them -- which is what the second image is. Since the UDCU has basically folded, I guess its safe to show the pic now!
