As some of you may have noticed, we got another "bandwidth limit exceeded" message on the site at the end of January. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE optimize your photos for the web! Case in point, Feb 1st a DC 1Mil pic was posted that weighs in at almost 2mb! Saved in photoshop, optimized for the web, it was less than half that. If bandwidth becomes an issue again, we may be forced to either limit file sizes or turn on the queue. DON'T MAKE US TURN ON THE QUEUE!!! *points threateningly*

And also PLEASE, P-L-E-A-S-E, when posting comments, Keep the type all lower case! UPPER CASE letters use twice as much bandwidth as lower case letters. We have to conserve anywhere we can, folks. DO YOUR PART. Seriously, on average I have found that you can drop the setting as low as 50-60 without losing any noticeable quality. And lets face it, your pic wasn't that good to begin with!!

I say do it. A queue builds the anticipation.
And if you can't fill the screen with less than 150kb then there's something wrong.
Max - optimised for 1024 x 768 pixels of fun!

Doesn't one have to post images to be a part of the problem... I guess that makes me part of the solution... I just don't feel like working on anything... Blur... am I allowed to put a capitol letter at the beginning of my sentences? Point taken... but I am still not optimizing! *Stomping foot!*

It's not necessarily how big the files are, it's how many users are viewing/downloading them, which is compounded by how each user connects.
If I am on a high-speed connection and I click on a 2 meg file, it may take only a second or two to get it. I used the bandwidth but only for a very short time. A dial-up user on the other hand may take 30 seconds or more. So the second user is likely to collide with other users since it takes him longer to "get off the highway". So you have bandwidth issues.
This is a very "image-intensive" site. The artwork (of course), all the little avatars and emoticons and such, banners, etc. All these things take up bandwidth each and every time a page is refreshed or rendered by the browser. So unless you start limiting logins, there's not much you can do. I don't think reducing file sizes will help all that much.

I am the rotten culprit in question. I have learned my lesson. In all of this talk of size limitations no has put a number to it. How about it guys? Your posted size limit is 2048x2048 that's it... What is the file size limit?

just a thought. this site was all about no file limits...that was what made hmorph different than C2F. maybe throw up a helpful sentence to registering members about how to save down/optimize for web, etc. that way you've cleared yourself for the #### hitting the fan down the road. here is a tutorial you could even link out Optimize. or someone could make one, it's a simple process....depending on your app. it's silly to think that all artists know how to shave an image down, some will know how, others might just have that basic photoshop knowledge and whip up whatever without realizing file size or how to optimize it. then you have the scan pics that someone leaves at the high setting and......well you get the idea. it's just a thought. dan

In an effort to save bandwidth we have changed the requirements for posting in the regular gallery. File sizes now must be 600k or less and the picture dimensions can be 1500 x 1500 max. 600 k is more then enough space for any picture is properly optimized. Please no matter what your picture size is, please optimize your pictures for the web. This change only affects the public gallery, as most of the bandwidth is lost there, the other sections have not been changed. Thank you

Just to let everyone know, we have been up for 2 days and we have already used up 11% of our monthly bandwidth. If this keeps up the site will be gone around the 20th of this month. Have a nice day.
