I think the current changes I made to the site will work for now. They could very well still give us the boot still but hey we will be back again.

I have turned the site off to non-members and I am not accepting any new members to the site. So that alone will make a massive difference in our bandwidth.

I hope everything works out. I would really miss this site and the great art it has to showcase. Here's to hoping the member's gallery is available soon.

I really think having so many pictures automatically be loaded on the front page of the site was a waste of bandwidth. Links would have been a lot smarter since I think the heromorph members without high-speed access would find the front page very slow in loading.

Nothing like a website crash and missing members gallery to bring out the lurkers missing the free porn... and there goes one now!

W-Hawk, I appreciate that contributors, non-lurkers and gold members are being taken care of in this problematic time. It is a good object lesson in 'not taking things for granted'.
Thank you.

well that dose suck, I think, and its only a thought (not even sure it would help) but to limit the amount of images Posters have in there gallery? also maybe limit the use of smilelys and anything animated would also make sence. Im sure if we all worked together we could help the bandwidth issue just a thought...

I never knew I was a 'lurker'! But I now assume that title is given to someone who doesn't upload images (?). Now, I've been a member for some years but 2 things - (1) lack of artistic skill and (2) arthritis - have contributed to my 'lurker' status. For those like me who love the site, can't artistically contribute and wouldn't want to see its demise, would an annual subscription (a 'Golden Lurker' membership) help in any way?

I've never had problems with nudity etc, thanks perhaps to my liberal european upbringing, and do not like having limited access (i.e. not to the Members' Gallery stuff). Some is art worthy, some is funny, some is downright silly (in my opinion}. In other words, it's probably a good mix.

Actually the people Hawk is refering to are non-members. they are called lurkers because they lurk in the shadows without announcing their presence or giving names. Being a member and just not posting (words or pics) is really lurking. It's just not contributing to the community. Savvy?

As roadkill on the information superhighway, I can't help much. But I suggest (if possible) that submitters be enabled to clean out their own galleries or remove files. (I mean, I'd love to clean out some other submitters' galleries -- but that would not be in the HM spirit...).

Thanks for the idea. but this would increase bandwidth.
Most people do not look at older images. Most people do not go past the front page unless they are new or have been away for some time. If every member started to browse their galleries and go threw the motions of deleting images the amount of traffic and image loading would increase. this would decrease the file size of the site. but would definately increase bandwidth on the short term.

A lurker is someone who... lurks, member or not. That means visiting the site without saying anything (we can tell by the number of posts under your name, 3 is pretty lurkerish for 2+ years).

If you had made comments or taken part in forum threads you would not be a lurker.

Artistic skill increases with practice. With some of these modern mediums it is possible to make images without any artistic skill... I do it all the time!

But, off the top of my head, some ways non-artists could contribute to heromorph:
- encouragement via comments
- offer to help with site administration
- fan fiction
- find 'new' artists and encourage them to join (not currently)
- find companies who want to advertise on HM
- come up with other fundraising ideas for HM

That's just off the top of my head! The point is, there are always ways to help.

We are currently trying to get the servers records of bandwidth usage for our virtual server package and all the sites that we host on it to compare it to our own and to see if there is any differences. We have made multiple requests in the past few days and so far have been ignored at this point.

We want to see if their logs and records compaire with the ones that we have of our own.

I am pretty sure the hosts realize they are being cocksuckers but they have overloaded the server that we rent so they are unable to honour contracts such as ours, so instead of dealing with the overload themselves. they decided to look at the popular sites on the server that are stopping hem from overloading and extort them.

Nothing new will really be happening, we looked at our logs for the site and took action to impact the bandwidth and resource use. Until we either find a new host that will meet both our pricing and hosting needs, or work out something with our current hosts. The way the site was was actually with in the scope of our agreement as far as we can tell we have not done anything wrong but to keep the site online in the interm we made some changes. because a little heromorph is better then no heromorph.

they have replied to us by not providing us with logs to show our gross bandwidth useage and advised us that they would monitor it

So I am turning the site back on. as well as some of the previously removed areas.

at this point I am not going to be giving the site a full restore but just a partial one.

They are thieves. What a load of shit.

This people are such a buncha...
They probably don't even know what they are doing, probably that's why they don't sent the server records.
They better monitor us (something they probably never did), and if we are under our limit, let's see what they have to say then.

At least, a good thing came out of this: some of the lurkers realized they don't need to post images to participate on the site and started to comment more.

Another step that might be taken, and I've seen this done on other forums, is that non-members or members who have not signed in will not see avatars displayed. That might be another means of speeding things up a bit.

That sounds cool. It's not like lurkers w/o membership really need to know who's who, right?
I can tell you I'm doing my part to keep the band usage to a minimum. I used to spend all day 4 days a week at HM, flitting around the site, trying to see everything. But now I have, and now I have a new gotta-see-everything site to spend my time at. And I can't use the shoutbox anymore either. So I just keep up with new pics and the forum here, figuring that makes me a contributing member, then go nuts at the other site.

P.S. Don't get jealous, this other site is just writing, HM is still my goto for pics!
