With shells the size of a football field the atortal is the largest life form on the world of Gianos. These massive sea turtles ply the oceans feeding on the tiniest of creatures. Born live by the hundreds and the size of an earth sea turtle very few live to adulthood as most are picked off by predators. Juveniles swim about the shallows gradually moving out to deeper water. As they grow a cavity forms underneath the shell connected to the trachea. This chamber acts as a natural scuba tank providing the reptile with additional air while feeding. However this chamber in turn robs the turtle of its ability to dive relegating it to float on the surface and duck its head under to feed. Over time vegetation takes root turning the atortle into a living island. An atortal with a thick grove of trees indicates that it is a very old animal.
