Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu See, I'm not the only one who instantly thought of that song for this! Please, tell me you didn't know that would happen once you started making this image. It's a great image, and makes me wish Marvel would do a Shang Chi movie.

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu Thanks Dack and Das! Dack: Oh yeah, Diana Rigg in those sexy leather outfits laying down those Martial Arts beatings on dudes! She was hot! Yr right, Das... it definitely would be cool to do the whole group! I love doing interesting characters and there's a whole load of 'em in that crew! Unfortunately, I'm presently on to other things but I may yet come back to these guys.

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu I love this stuff of of my favorite Comic series and thinking back some of this fight stuff stems back to that series were the guy goes:- "Mrs.Peel we're Needed!" And remember back in the mid-60's she was fighting guys with her moves not women.

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu Thanks DD and DW! Uhhh, I don't know what's in those red and blue pills you took but that is one crazy scenario you've set up with Shang Chi, Quick Kick and Neo! I like it. You got any more of those? Dammit, DW! You should be sorry... now you got that song stuck in my head too! For those members too young to remember, here's a little 70's flashback to get your funky groove on with:

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu I'm thinkin' put Shang here in a three way battle with GI Joe's Quick Kick and Keanu's "I know Kung Fu" Neo...and you'd have an interesting clash of the Kung Fu masters. From coolest to lamest... In one corner you'd have a great Martial artist, and cool character of Shang Chi, in another, one of the few Joe's actually killed by a Cobra henchman...and in the third, Keanu...'nuff said.
Regardless...this is a cool image, and thanks to DW, I now have that song stuck in my head.
Anyway...Great job on a rarely named, and even more rarely seen character. Nicely done!

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu Thanks MB and Star! MB: Actually I have the same problem... that's what photoshop is for! The 2 thugs were rendered separately and layered in. Star: Hellz yeah! I LOVED that Moench/Gulacy run on Shang Chi!! Moench's writing was excellent on the series and Gulacy, borrowing lots of style points from Steranko and adding his masterful portait abilities to have (easily recognizable) stars as his characters like Marlon Brando, Marlene Detrich and Sean Connery really made for a really fun and exciting comic! It makes me very happy to hear you say I captured a bit of that classic Shang magic! Of course, you have a very sharp eye and noticed all the stuff I'm not happy with too! Actually, photoshop was all touchup and layering and a little PS brushwork for the background (lightning from a free PS brush set I found on the web, and birds and tree are custom brushes I made myself). Shang's design is pure 3D. Dammit, I don't know how the hell I screwed up that hair! Probably hit the poser option instead of Daz or maybe didn't have materials selected when I clicked but I had made a point of setting it to black and I guess it didn't take. I always appreciate those heads-ups, bud Thanks again. (fixed) I had seen a more modern guest appearance of Shang and no headband so I started think it was more of a 70's kind of thing (left off his blue wrist bracers too). I'm not happy with how Leiko's face came out. She looked pretty good in the design phase but sometimes the face morphs and expression morphs don't play together as well as I'd like. Actually, I had originally planned to do the whole crew: Fu Manchu, Sir Dennis Nayland Smith, Blackjack Tarr and Clive Renton however I always find myself facing the paradox that as I add more characters, I add more story yet lose more focus on the individual characters. I suppose I could've squeezed in a couple more thugs here without zooming out although that would've meant obscuring Stoney's beautiful set which I wanted to show too so ultimately I decided to use fewer characters to keep focus on Shang. Great appreciation for the comprehensive review and kind words! Thanks, bud!

Re: Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu I do believe this might be the very first 3D rendering of what was my favorite comicbook martial artist of all time. I loved reading Shang Chi and loved the stunning artwork by Paul Gulacy. You've come pretty close to capturing that style here [at least with Shang anyway] the modeling on him is excellent especially the texture and bump work. I've never seen clothing close to what Shang wore so I'm assuming that a certain amount of Photoshop went into his design so much that I dont even mind the loss of his trademark headband. Well done. Great composition and excellent choice of background sets. Only thing that might have made this better is the addition of a few more judo thugs and maybe even ol' daddy Fu Manchu in the background. Minor nit: Shang's hair is black not brown. Now where's that 10 button?
