So I'm taking Art 101....
I know...I know.... It's way below my skill.
But I wanted to go back to the basics and it's actually helping me loosen up. but it's been tough...our first week of "this is how you hold a pencil and this is a gesture drawing" really was tough to bare.

So we had to do five self portraits and then choose one of those drawings and do an impressionistic portrait of it.
I will up load the portrait I used, but it was of me as bat-girl and really realistic. http://reddera.deviantart.com/art/self-portraits-feb-2010-155295494 > Third portrait.
So my professor comes up and says I have a problem focusing on all of the detail and I should do something simple...with weird color combos

Professor: "you should do it like Pacosso."
Me: "No I can't, I hate Pacasso... something else"
Professor: Disnify yourself."
Me: (big smile, high pitched voice) "really!"

So this is me as a Disney character.

I had to take a picture with my camera, I'll see If I can scan it somehow.

Soft pastels on 11X17 white paper, Mechanical Pencil 7.0, Fractal eraser, tissues, smudge stick

Redd, this is great.
It's nice to see ya working in a different direction. Gives us all the more reason to realize just how talented you are.
I totally agree with pijon and MissVee, too. Very cute, very cool.
And the Disney/Daphne look is great for you.
Plus you threw in Batgirl for an even more prefect blend of references (Redd, Daphne, Disney, BG...awesome combo!)

As for Art 101 being way below your level...well...yes, I agree there, too. However, everyone needs a class they don't struggle in. (And this'll be a cakewalk for ya)
This one should let you have a lot of fun with little pressure. So enjoy it.

As for the pic itself here...I especially like your choice of the blue hues for not only the sky, but also the shadows.
Something about the primary colors of the red hair and blue sky that makes the image pop. Great choice with the backdrop, too.
And you managed to capture the "cuteness" of the nose perfectly, too. (That's a good thing, Redd)
Nice work. I look forward to seeing more from this class, to contrast and compare with all your other great stuff.

Reminds me a little of Daphne from Scooby Doo. Looks really good.

Really? You think this is "way below your skill level"? Because I don't so much see it that way as you using a different set of skills... skills which I think you've done quite well at, I might add. I've always admired how some of the pros here like Android and KER1 shift between great realism and simpler cartoony styles and blend the two approaches in fantastic ways. Similarly, Jinky's work is a great balance of caricature and realism. This is very cool and I hope you continue to explore this direction. I think it might end up being beneficial in the end

I think it's cute! Looks like it could be a model-shot for a cartoon character (nice smile).
