Re: Challenge of the Artists round 2: Skrully Reed is excellent. A man who can impossibly stretch himself helps a lot any composition.
Sue is great for one reason: her shadow obbeys physics (although we forgot it to enjoy this kind of stories, of course!)
The Thing is shy. He doesn't like cameras! A good work with the textures, Mr. W.
The Human Torch has some problems... If I were you, I would incline his flames because, after all, he's flying quickly.
Super Skrull is scared to death and I don't think he has troubles already... he IS in trouble. Heh!
I'm aware about the lightning problems that these programs have but I'll keep saying this: If I were you, I would enhance the contrast of this pic, creating a magnificent sun in this cloudy sky.

Art notes Like the round one image, I did I actually had a few dozen image plans and false starts before actually getting to work on what became this image. I went thru a large number of different compositions on this image but finally settled on this one. I thought that having Super Skrull in the background and Mr. Fantastic taking up most of the foreground and stretching away for the image would be an effective way to both show a cool perspective as well as show the scale as long as I placed the heroes of the image across a 3d attack formation rather then a 2d one.
Once I decided how I was going to compose the image, I started making Super Skrull. I made the figure for him in poser 6. I did the head and body morph?s first using the m3 model from daz3d. After I was happy with the head morphs I made a custom skin texture for the Skrull model in Photoshop and applied the skin in poser. I used a lot of alligator scales on his skin, giving him a lizard like appearance close up. Once I finished making a poser skrull. I cut him in half and had a model for the legs and one for the torso. I stopped working on Skrull at this point.
I then started a new image in poser and set the background and camera angle as well as lighting, I was going for a gray, kind of crappy, day mostly because that is what it looked like out my window when I started working on this LOL. I then imported the two skrull half?s into the image. I made 4 renders, one of just the background, one with the background and the top half and the bottom half, one of just the top half and one with just his legs. I took these images into Photoshop and made a multiple layered psd file. I used the blank background as my base background image, I used some minor modifications on it in Photoshop to correct the lighting and bring out some details. I then separated the skrull legs and tops from their Jpg?s and using the render with them in place positioned and sized them.
I was now done with the Skrull for the time being and moved onto Mr.F. I knew what I wanted to do so he went rather easy. I went into poser and using a saved image of the background only posed the James (poser 6) into a diving position on the top of the image and then cut off his legs. I rendered 2 images one with James on the background and one of James with no background. Again I separated James from his JPG and added these two images into my psd file. I then maniped the top half of Mr. F. using standards maniping tools such as the pen tool, paintbrush, dodge, burn and gave him a suit and the gray sideburns. Then I painted him stretching off the side of the side of the image also I used the liquefy and smudge tool as well to help create the stretching section merging what I painted with the sections of the original model for the top of Mr. f. .(Basically I painted the shape and then smudged and liquefied the figure into the shape). Then I painted the lower portion of Mr.f. in Photoshop and smudged it, liquefied it together with a distorted image of a poser models back (same method as above). I then added a few details and colors onto him and moved to the next part.
I did Sue next. I made her with the V3 model from Daz3d. I used some custom body morphs and rendered her as a nude bald figure. I placed Her in the foreground near Mr. F. to help establish the scale of the scene with her size in the foreground as Mr. F stretched into the image beside her. Like the previous figures I rendered her twice once with a background and once without. I then separated the figure from the JPG and put her into the Photoshop psd file. Once in Photoshop I fully maniped her into sue, creating boots, gloves, belt and other costume features. I then painted the hair onto her and then used a layer mask with a gradient to cause the invisibility effect. After making her invisible I started on her force field. On a new layer I made a circle and used the gradient tool to make a sphere. Once I had the sphere, changed the opacity down to 20% and then merged his layer with a blank layer underneath it. This new layer was barely visible but had 100% opacity. I then ran the plastic wrap filter two or three times and then put the layer on vivid light mode to give it a more transparent look.
The human torch was next. I placed the Torch further away from the camera then the rest of the characters and his size and angle help develop the scale of the scene. For him, I rendered a base using the d3 model from daz3d. I applied some basic tone and muscle morphs to him and rendered him in pose (Twice once with background and once with out). I then maniped him by applying lava texture to the figure. And added flames to him as well as creating a flame trail and fire blast. The fire was made using a few different techniques; it is a mix of filters, painting and actual flames mixed together. Once I had the flames I gave them a slight motion blur and used to smudge to some more to try to give the flames a sense of motion. I also made the Skrull?s force field at this point. I used the same method as I did with Sue?s field. I then created the fire hitting the field using Images of explosions and using a clipping mask to the Skrull?s force field layer. I then create the heat distortion from the torch and his flames. I just used a big fuzzy blur and made a selection above and below on the background layer in quick mask mode. Inverted the selection and made a new layer via copy. Then I used the eye candy smoke filter a couple of times and a few of the blur filters reduced the opacity of the layer until it looked about right.
The Thing was fairly easy. I had a Thing poser model that I used. I put a car on top of him ready to be thrown. I placed him half way between Mr. F and the Torch. I wanted him to have the car to help show and reinforce sense of Scale. What you see is pretty much the actual render. After making the 2 versions, one with background and one without. I added a few reflections of orange from the fire on the car. I tried to make dents in the side of the vehicle where the things hand is using the dodge and burn tools. I then noticed the good ole? Thing was not wearing pants and his thing was out. I maniped on a pair of shorts on him and everyone was happy.
I then added in shadows to all the characters except Skrull . Using the second renders of the characters on the backgrounds as I guide for placement I added in shadows for all the characters. Remembering to fade Sue?s shadows as she goes invisible. I made the shadows by making a single duplicate layer of each character then painting it solid black, I used perspective adjustments and then moved them to where I wanted them. I then applied Gaussian blur to them and then reducing the opacity to around 5%.
Next was to go back to Skrull. First thing I did was give him a thing arm. I just used the thing model I had and put him in the same pose with the same camera angle that I had my Skrull model in and rendered. After renderings, I cut of his arm and franked it onto the main Skrull body. I then did the mid-section all stretched out. I did this the same as Mr.F. I painted the shape and the used liquefy and smudge to push the existing figure into the shape. I maniped the costume onto the character. And then created the fire hand in the same basic method I did the human torch. I then merged all the Skrull layers and used a layer mask to create the invisible mid-section fade. After that I adding in his shadow.
I was done at this point. I decided to add a few extra?s. I added in Antman, the Wasp, and Spiderman into the image.
On to the next image.
