I couldn't help but notice how little Doom Patrol there was in our gallery, particularly when compared to that other group of super-misfits led by a guy in a wheel chair. So while the Doom Patrol is on it's 6th lineup, I chose the original one: Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, Robotman and "the Chief".

 Re: Doom Patrol: the originals
Thanks.
Funny thing about tea... I sometimes have to try it to know if I'll like it. I am reminded of an older conversation we'd had about public domain characters. You'd said a lot of 'em were just too corny to use and I'd responded by saying there are no bad characters, just bad writers (though in comics, bad artists too). That's how I feel about characters and series too. In the original Doom Patrol run, I found the art a bit on the bland side but the stories were definitely weirder than the norm for superheroes so I enjoyed them because it was different. Now, I was a little slower to get started when Grant Morrison started writing. I liked Morrison as a writer but I was less keen on the art. While I agree with the theory that covers sell books (and comics and magazines) there can be a little backfire effect with comics when I see awesome cover art and less than that inside. That was the case with Morrison's Doom Patrol. It's not that Richard Case's interior art was bad, it was actually pretty good but way pale in comparison to the awesome Simon Bisley covers! Still once I bought a couple and read them, I was hooked enough to start tracking down back issues.
Now I haven't read any of the runs after that but as stated in a previous comment, I'd like to read John Byrne's run. That's because I know I've enjoyed when he wrote and drew Hulk, Alpha Flight, Fantastic Four and Superman. I know a good writer will write a good story and a good artist will draw it well. I have faith in their talents to elevate less interesting characters. Actually I can see where one might ague that Hulk, Alpha Flight, Fantastic Four and Superman actually are good characters so perhaps Alan Moore's Watchmen, based on cheesy Charlton characters, or his Tom Strong based on a bland Doc Savage knockoff (Doc Strange; no relation) or MiracleMan, based on a weak Captain Marvel knockoff (MarvelMan) are prime examples! So don't be too quick to write things off when you see solid talent behind it.

Never readt this comic much...new or old versions. IDK just not my cup of tea I guess. But this is pretty solid artwork regardless.

Er... for what that's worth.

Great piece, both in terms of line work and colouring. I particularly love the cool, sketchy way you did Negative Man.

Funny, I'm only familiar with everything through Morrison's run! I would like to read the more recent stuff at some point, particularly Byrne's run on the series. Still, familiar with the beginning or not, these original members have shown up in multiple lineups and all of them are included the current "new 52" version. Of course Robotman is a bit like Chris Squire was in prog-rock band Yes (before his passing anyway), which is to say he was the one constant in a continually rotating lineup however apparently not even death stopped these original members since Drake killed them all off at the end of the first run. Probably because he was pissed at DC. He had already left DC over a pay dispute and only did the final issue as a favor to his friend, Bruno Premiani, the artist on the book at the time.

Anyway, original writer Arnold Drake was attempting to produce a more Marvel-like title with infighting among the group and such. Drake's original series was pretty darned weird and Morrison's even weirder! (Kupperburg's brief run in the middle was "meh".)

So I had this thought while working on this... a bit of a "what if" scenerio. When Kirby left Marvel and headed over DC, there was plenty of head scratching over what book to put Kirby on. I can't believe the editors over at DC weren't smart enough to suggest Doom Patrol. DP had many elements of X-Men, Fantastic Four and Challengers of the Unknown... ALL books Kirby had worked and thrived on. What a different history this group might've had if Kirby got it! Heck, we'd probably be talking about the Doom Patrol movies now!

...and thanks for compliments! A modestly different approach to Negative Man so I'm happy you liked it!
