Matthew M. Laskowski AKA fox-orion has created something called an Influence Map.
The idea is a very simple one: you take a 1462 H x 1000 W and divide it into a grid. You then fill those grids with 3x3, 2x2, 2x1 and 1x1 tiles containing images of whatever has inspired you as an artist. Whatever you want... photos, paintings, comics, your art, someone else's art, 3D, vector, whatever... hell, if you wanna go off the grid, go nuts!
I suggested this as a monthly challenge in the forums and all I hear is crickets chirping. Everybody SEZ they want challenges but do they really? I say yr all little be-yotches who won't step up! I'm openly challenging all members, mods and lurkers to step up and do one... if you think it's too hard, it's not... if you think it's too easy you'll find it's not that either. I've opened my brain and showed you what spilled out... let's see what's in your head!
You can be sure I'll be doing this little exercise again in the future.

Nice grouping! Why didn't I think of Eisner and Wood? I think I need a bigger map as well.

Thanks B! Actually I was completing this as I was compiling it... no forethought, just whatever choices came immediately to mind. I actually didn't noticed how all emphasis was placed on illustrators with a high level of craft till it was done. At that moment, I was regretting not taking a more all encompassing view of overall influences but I still haven't been able to wrap my brain around that one yet though I thought you did an admirable job of covering the spectrum on yours. Isi and Dark Jedi... yeah, those guys do stuff that blows me away on the regular! Yr ol' buddy Android was another regular here I included whose work was always off the charts amazing. Whatever happened to that guy? As I recall, your pencils weren't bad at all and you actually managed to surprise me with some really good 3D sometimes too... you really should work with that stuff more often.

Gaah! I forgot Alex Ross! How could I forget Alex Ross?

Some great choices here. There's a nice selection of illustrators here that I discovered too late to be an influences on me but whom I have since grown to tremendously respect. Nice to see some of our own artists here too. Isi and Dark Jedi definitely show just how much can be accomplished with 3D. Kinda makes me wish I had the patience to get good with it (or with a pencil).

Thanks bud... you got the right idea! Just a fun little exercise that promotes your favorite art. Glad you enjoyed it... while I would call Isi and Dark Jedi my peers in terms of having talked with both through comments and PMs but in terms of talent, not my peers but what I aspire to be.

 Re: Pijon's Influence Map
I've seen a lot of people do these things and never thought of doing one myself until now, as I've never really felt that I actually needed to do one as I know what my influences are and have always thought why the heck do I need to write them down for? But, now I see that there is another side to it that I never really thought of in that it's a fun little exercise to play around with and show others those influences near and dear to your heart or just whatever floats your boat! The beauty of this is like you said, it can include anything and you can go anywhere with it, which you have by not only including well known professional artists, but some of your peers in 3D modeling which is really cool.

 Re: Pijon's Influence Map
Thanks, bud. I whipped this out pretty quickly (for me; 1.5 hours ), a little google and photoshop. It felt very liberating for me to do a quick piece for a change! Aye, you've uncovered me nefarious plot to give us all insight into each others' work! I guarantee you'll be happy with yours when you're done! You'll also find it does actually provide inspiration just looking at the damned thing... all my favorite peeps! I'm glad you decided to step up... I figured you would. I can't wait to see yours!
While I just whipped this one out quickly, I'd really like to go back to this as this simple exercise could easily expand into a tricky and complex one if one wanted it to be and I might like to explore different subjects as on this one, I did artists but one might just as easily do a genre inspiration map (ex:sci-fi, superhero, sword and sorcery) or characters or TV shows and movies or authors or places or any combination of things... it boggles the mind just thinking about the possibilities! :
