Jaime Pressley as Emma Frost, caught in the middle of transforming into her diamond skin.

Face, hair and body Frankensteined together. The skin tone was all over the place, so I desaturated the piece to B&W and then recoloured everything. I did the usual stuff for the costuming. The diamond effect (which I'm really happy with) I created using a crystalline texture I made (a metallic Bryce abstract that I carved up into lots of little triangles) and a translucent mask. The light glinting off her hand I did based on a tutorial at Shiver 7 (http://www.shiver7.com/tutorials/), and the little refraction spectra were from scratch. The background (smudged Bryce, as usual) is the Xavier Institute from Grant Morrison's New X-Men.

For the logo-conscious, this was one of my first pics with a standardized logo. (I think Harley Quinn 2 was *the* first.) Yes, it's still just a handwritten B, but it's the *same* handwritten B I've used in every pic since.

I still really like this piece, though I've done better since.

I think I started out the same way, working around not having "layers" so I can certainly appreciate the kind of hard work that results in a picture like this. Been starring at it for awhile. Wonderfully work! needs more lens flair tho' (ducking)

I don't really care whether the model's recognizeable, so long as the piece is good. I made a few changes to her face in this pic, mostly around the mouth and eyes. WH: Thanks, man! I love getting comments like this! I ought to let you in on a secret, though... I may not have layers, but I can use things like masks and different painting modes (equivalent to layer styles like multiply, screen , colourize, etc.) to duplicate a <i>lot</i> of layer effects. So I'm not entirely helpless! Oh, and thank you as well, kallisti. Now, c'mon, people, more comments please! I'm dying to know what all you HM folks think of my work...

This picture amazes me because I know that the program you use does not have layers, and for you to do this in a program with out layers still amazes me today. great job. Wonderful.

With out knowing the model's name I wouldn't be able to Idnetify her. Even with you telling us who she is, I still can't see her in there. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing, just thought I would let you know. I like that you didn't take the normal way to do the Dimond skin. your version seams more likely to be how she uses it in the comics. Do more. Please.
