Well this started out as a simple John Romita (Snr) drawing of the amazing Spider-Man. The original drawing simply showed the character crouching and a shadow. After coloring the image, I decided that Spider-Man would be crawling through a dank tunnel or sewer. I created this background using a combination of layers tweaked using the perspective tools to create the illusion that the tunnel was narrowing behind our hero. After looking at the image for a few days like this, I decided to flip it vertically and add some additional elements - so now Spidey and crawling UP the wall of a down spout, towards the lip of a horizontal section upon which there is a small puddle of water - in my head this signifies that Hydro Man is up there waiting for him.

Btw if anyone has any tips or guides for coloring water please let me know here or over at my site: http://www.localhero.org.uk

Well this is an oldie. I originally started coloring this way way WAY back in 2003 but was never happy with the results. I tried again towards the end of 2004 and again was less than satisfied with the progress. I decided to give it another go because I felt it could be a very dramatic image if colored properly. The original drawing by Kevin Newburn was titled Iron Sentinel, however I felt that having a corroded sentinel breaking open the wall/doors would be a nice look. Done in PSP X2 with a blend of textures and various overlay layers as well as some lighting effects (the eyes in particular). I almost submitted the image and then thought to add a couple of extra sets of eyes behind the main sentinel to indicate there are more behind him waiting to burst free from whatever prison that held them. Hope  you like.

Btw Kev's work can now be found over at http://kevinnewburn.tumblr.com/

Well I found the inked drawing by Ian Churchill on a random Google search and thought it would be great to color. I then noticed that it was the cover to Weird World of Jack Staff #21 so I used the colored cover image as a guide/inspiration but gave it my own spin. So where the original cover has the hero on a roof with a cloudy daylight sky (complete with overlayed images of other cast members), I decided to make my version a night time piece. I think it turned out ok.

Another piece I started a while back and never got round to finishing. I loved this greyscale drawing created by Mike Deodato of Ben and Franklin the moment I saw it. It really captures the family feeling that Fantastic Four comic exudes when well written. Anyway this was basically coloring over a greyscale image to get the basic blocking, and then creating additional multiple/overlay and screen and gradient fill layers to give the color the same depth that the greyscale image had. Once I was happy with the coloring I flattened the layers and then applied a brush strokes filter to give it a more messy look. Most of this was done way back in 2004 however I never posted it then. I had another look at it today and tidied up some of my masks and edging and tweaked some of the coloring as I wanted Ben to be more orange than the original stone color I had. Anyway hope you folks out there enjoy it. And thanks again to Mike for making a great image in the first place

Well I was watching How To Train Your Dragon on TV the other night (yes again - it is one of those animations that I can repeat view over and over) and started doodling in Sai, trying to capture this moment from the film. I think I did ok?

Another inking and coloring of a sketch for practice in Sai. This time an Alan Davis sketch of Captain Britain was the source. As well as the head, I decided to add some "hills" as a background. Enjoy.

Another image that began in response to a sketch challenge over on deviantart. This was created using myself as a photo reference (part of the challenge).

The 60 minute (challenge deadline) version can be found here: http://eiledon.deviantart.com/art/DSCWC-27-08-Me-as-Rorschach-255290880

I decided to keep going after the 60 minutes and Finalised the coloring and recreated a background from the comic (smoggy sky). Smudged up the inkblot to make it look more like the movie and added lots of shading and highlights etc. Coat and hat now also have a texture as does the mask.

Well I was watching Wolverine: Origins again tonight and the liberties that were taken with Deadpool encouraged me to recreate one of my fave panels from the comic in penance for watching the movie. Here we see a sort of existential moment for Wade as he rediscovers his crush.

Lettering added in PSPX2, other than that everything else done in Sai.

Well I am having a bit of a superhero weekend what with browsing Deviant and watching superhero movies on TV. I came across the pencils for this image via one of the groups of which I am a member and was so taken by them that I had to have a go at inking and coloring/shading them as a gift to a talented artist.

Hope I did the image justice!

Well I started this some time ago in PSP X2 but recently redid the inks completely in Sai. Following the pencils of our old friend Kevin Newburn whose work you can find at his webpage and also at tumblr page

I always enjoy working on Kev's stuff, his style just appeals to me.

x-statix is of course copyright Marvel/Disney

I have also flatted out the colors here and will post the finished one when i get around to shading it.

I completed this image for the 27/09/2011 dailysketchchallenge: The Leader: 15-30 minute sketch http://outcaststudios.com/forums/index.php/topic/11211-daily-sketch-challenge-vol16-37/

Got really into this one so here it is after 45 mins - was going to have him holding a remote control or a radio but once I had drawn it I realised it looked like an old ipod classic - hence Apple iLeader

It had been a long day and I guess I am easily amused!

I used a painting of The Goon by Eric Powell as my reference for this sketch. Time taken around 60mins to get it to this colored stage.

Well I finally got this finished (well as finished as it is going to be).

I was reminded the other week of going to see the original Spiderman movie (with Nicholas Hammond) back in 1977 and thought it would be fun to do a picture inspired by that movie costume.

Wanted to capture that haunted/hunted feel that Spidey often has with the Bugle trying to turn everyone against him.

Drawn and painted in Sai - time taken? Far too long  Enjoy.

Well I saw this sketch http://monet88.deviantart.com/art/Valkyrie-262074891 by Monet88 http://monet88.deviantart.com/ and was so inspired by the pose and style that I decided to use it as a reference for my own Valkyrie image.

Here we see young Brunhilde leaving a Frost Giant Camp in Jotunheim after having defeated them as a right of passage into adulthood. In accordance with tradition she has blooded her face as proof of her accomplishment.

I liked the basic pose and style of Monet's interpretation of Ultimate Valkyrie, so this is as much a homage to his image as to the Marvel Comic character.

I visited Outcast and saw that yesterday's theme was to do a poster for a James Bond movie. http://outcaststudios.com/forums/index.php/topic/11353-daily-sketch-challenge-james-bond-007/  Given that Sean Connery is still my favourite Bond (although Daniel Craig is growing on me quickly in the role) and I have seen Dr No more times than I can remember I thought I would do something in the form of a playing card - the Jack of Hearts to be precises. I think this is fitting since Bond is a big fan of cards (bacarrat) and they is a bit of a jack the lad, breaking womens hearts wherever he goes. Also the two heads flipped makes an interesting design i think. This took about 2 hours to do. Over this challenges 90mins but was enjoying it.

For those not on tablets or unwilling to flip your screen or unhinge your neck - I have included the reversal of the image too

Was looking for something different to draw last weekend so went back into the Outcast Archived challenges again and pulled out this one http://outcaststudios.com/forums/index.php/topic/10885-weekend-staffers-challenge-mr-mrs-outcast/

The challenge: If Outcast Studios were to host a happily married super heroic tandem in action... what would they look like??? What powers would they have?
The only guideline here is that they're a male and female couple each bearing the Outcast Studios logo letters "OS" is some way or fashion. Showing their powers in use is a plus. Designing their super powered pet is entirely optional!

Seen Here

Mr Outcast = Multitool - with the ability to transform his body into artistic implements; pens, pencils, knives, brushes etc

Mrs Outcast = Prismatica - with the ability to generate large quantities of liquid of many colors, Prismatica is the perfect partner for Multitool
