This is the colored version of the sketch that I added to the Hellfire gallery of the imaginary comic book cover for my character The Christian. I thought the Grand Inquisitor would be a cool villain(the 'friend or foe' thing is sorta silly and not much of a mystery but it seemed like a cool thing they used to put on covers) for him to sort of embody all of the times thru history where people have done horrible things in the name of Christianity. For instance, The KKK, The Inquisition(hence the Grand Inquisitor), etc. As usual I'm disappointed in this but I'm beginning to realize that I'm just always disappointed in my stuff. I doubt I'll ever be able to change that so I'm gonna try not to think about it.

:update: Ok, I tried to add some depth to the color areas. Everyone was right. The flat colors sucked.

Please tell me he is Spanish and can appear at will from the shadows so....well...wait for it......wait.......because "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition" Sorry just had to say it LOL. Seriously I think light and shadow on the guy should be coming from under him to give a better feel of creepy mystry. Every artist is their own worst critic, never truly happy with their own work.

I can't believe you are disapointed in your own work, you are one of my favorites, I love your pencil work. I would agree on a few points with the above. The colors are a bit dullish, but I think you were going for that older comic cover look. If thats the case you nailed it. The rest is just personal taste, but the art is amazing as always. Excellent work.

I do appreciate your comments and support. I just have a difficult time shaking the feeling that my artwork still hasn't shed an amateurish, somewhat hacky feel. But I will admit that I probably see it with skewed perceptions. I've always been told that I don't see MYSELF the way others do so it would stand to reason I have the same problem with my art.

I think this comic could have a niche market. It would sell in Christian stores, for sure.

I think the art is fine.

Hmmm.... you open for a rather blunt critique? Here goes... numbah 1. This isn't exactly the type of comic book character I expect to be flying of the shelves... simply because religious material or anything implying that there may be religious material within doesn't tend to sell too well.... it definitely would not interest me.

numbah 2. The colors and background make it all seem a bit......eh, flat. A lack of highlights and shadowing doesn't help this piece much.

numbah 3. a hammer? you give him a hammer with a crucifix on it?? I see some issues there, I also see why you would give him the hammer.

Over all, it creates this holy-campy-indie feel, which doesn't mean its bad...it doesn't mean its good either. A thing to remember....dark sells.... have him battling demons and almost getting his butt handed to him....

Don't worry, I have no illusions about this character actually being popular. This world, including myself, is much too sick, twisted and just plain evil for that. These drawings are just for my enjoyment. You're right about the colors but my skills at the highlighting and shading aren't what I would like and tend to usually end up making my pics more confusing visually.

Overall I like this. The pencils are great. I agree the colors seem a little flat and need some shading.
