Re: Black Canary I used Trinity from the Matrix as the model for the vinyl costume. The secret to photomanips is layers... Lots and lots of layers. The model had her own, the black vinyl was it's own. The grey vinyl was two (left and right) layers at one time. The outer seams between the grey and black is it's own layer. The armguards are their own layers. The belt was 6 layers. the ribguards are their own layer. The necklace is it's own layer. The head is it's own layer. And lastly, the background is 2 layers. I cut the model out of the original background using the erase tool from her shoulders-down. And used the Extract tool for the head. (Extract is the best photoshop tool ever!) Both vinyl colors were made from a duplicate of the model layer. I desaturated (Cntrl+Shift+U) it, ran the smudge tool over it to get rid of the jpeg artifacts. The gray I left alone and I used Opticals metal technique on the Black layer. The highlights and seams were made with the Dodge and Burn tools of various sizes and generally 20% strength. Followed by the smudge tool at 10% to smooth out areas. For the ridges and seams I cut the gray layer in half at the middle portion of the seam. The first layer was selected and then I contracted the layer 5 pixels and inverted the selection. I used the Dodge and Burn tools again to build up the color. I did the same thing to the other side and merged the layers. I duplicated the gray layer again selected the layer contracted the selection 2 pixels and deleted the selected portion. This left a 2 pixel line of the original image. I erased what I didn't need and applied the dropshadow and Emboss layer styles. This allowed me to go back to the main gray layer and add additional strech lines near the seams and over the bulk of the costume. The belt is just a selection of the model's waist that I desaturated and Painted gold using the brush tool with the "Color" modification on. The belt pouches are ammo holders that I cut out and painted like the belt. The buckle is 2 big gold circles. The inner circle is a Circular gradient of the lightest and darkest colors I got from the painted ammo clips. The outer portion of the buckle I loaded the selection of the circle. Contracted it 5 pixels and used the same gradient starting at the lower right. I burned the upper edge to make it look "harder". I inverted the selection and reversed the process for the outer portion of the buckle. The metal bands are done in the same way as the belt just with highlights and shadows at the edges. I merged all the costume layers together and this is where I actually applied the faded Plastic Wrap. The rest was making the backgroud. the guardrail was added in and I locked the layer for the hair and painted white with a very large soft brush to make the hair less noticable.
