You could try using a BW image. Then, you start adding colors carefully. Try to do the opposite you were doing, Miss Vee.

This is really, REALLY cool! It looks like you reduced a pic to two basic colours - green & brown - and then proceeded to moderate the tones? I tried this a couple of times but was never satisfied (nothing like this). I started with a full colour manip and then eliminated all but two colours.
