Not only is my friend AL RIO is one of the biggest and best artists in comicdom, he's also one of today's premier "good girl artists," as his many commissions on alrioart.com can attest.

These days, Al Rio is the full-time artist on VAMPIRELLA -- plus, he's working on a huge project called NINETY, which you'll hear much more about next year.

Al drew a wonderful illustration showing all three incarnations of Jinky (Princess, Future Freedom Fighter, and Schoolgirl), plus her friends (Michelle, Rommel, and Kat).  I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out.

I'm back!  This second posting should introduce you all to the world(s) of my character -- BANZAI GIRL.  Y'see, in "real life," my character is a college schoolgirl, whose life has made a left turn into weird.  Not only do I have these bizarre dreams that I'm either a Futuristic Freedom Fighter or a Princess Jinky...

...but I also find myself battling classic Filipino monsters of myth!

In this illustration, this is all three versions of my character -- Princess Jinky; Banzai Girl; and Freedom Fighter Jinky.

Here's how we created this:  I did the drawing of the scene.  I then posed for all three figures, in the costumes, which Don Feenerty photographed.  And Eugene Perez did the final composite onto the background.

I know a lot of guys reading my EXPOSURE series over at exposure.keenspot.com, and who study the pinups I do here on Heromorph, tend to undress Lisa and Shawna with their eyes (and minds!!).

So being the gentle, helpful soul that I am, I figured, "Why don't I help them?"

Does that make me the best "wing girl" ever?

Of course, in my inevitably feminine fashion, I made them into PAPER DOLLS to be dressed and undressed!

So here is lovely LISA SHANNON in all her glory, ready to be draped and decorated in both her action uniform and in a sexy party dress.

Hope you like it.  Let me know what you think!

Someone in the COMMISSIONS section of the forum wanted to see examples of me doing characters OTHER than my Banzai Girl character, so I'm happy to oblige.

This is another commission I was hired to do, for Marvel's SCARLET WITCH.

I'd planned to post this up earlier today, but I passed out at lunchtime and ended up in the ER all afternoon.  They told me I'd stopped breathing for 30 seconds.  I still have no clue what caused it.
I was woozy for awhile, but now I feel fine.

Art by me.  Color by my usual colorist Katrina Mae Hao.

The story behind it:  My daughter Jasmine -- whom a lot of people that know us refer to as "Banzai Girl 2.0" -- is really into SAILOR MOON these days.  So much so, that I bought for her a really nice custom Sailor Moon costume, along with real boots and handmade jewelry to match.  Yup, she's been running around the house pretending to be the character.  A lot.

So I decided, "Why not do a piece with Sailor Moon, and Jasmine, and me?"

The room I'm depicting really IS Jazzy's bedroom.  I added Jasmine in costume having a grand time; Sailor Moon hanging out with her; and me -- looking a touch bedraggled as only a Mom can look -- kinda of miffed that Jasmine prefers dressing up more as Sailor Moon than as Banzai Girl!  To add more authenticity, I added other stuffed animals (including Hello Kitty) and our own Wilfred character equally miffed by the appearance of his cat counterpart from the Sailor Moon series.

What do you think?

This is the cover art for the upcoming EXPOSURE book that I'm working on for keenspot.com, entitled NIGHT OF THE LIVING DAD!  This story should premiere in February.

I wanted to go with a real 1970s-era "Marvel black-and-white magazine covers" approach like the editors showed me for books like Dracula Lives, Monsters Unleashed, and (of course) Tales of the Zombie.

So main characters Shawna Diaz (the brunette) and Lisa Shannon (the blonde) are attacked in a graveyard by hideous, rotting corpses!  How to make it weird, and scary, and yet still sexy?

Again, I hope the details make it sing:  The leggy uniforms (created by Al Rio when he drew the original EXPOSURE stories), the high heels, the strategically-shredded clothing, the way the monsters grab the characters, the girls' expressions, and so on.  Color is by Katrina Mae Hao.

Did I make it work?  Let me know!  :)

I just returned from Chicago Comic-Con (which used to be called Wizard World Chicago Con...and before that, it was, umm, Chicago Comic-Con)....

A fan wanted me to do an 11" x 17" commission of "Wonder Woman with her lasso, no background," so I chose a pose that was playful, not intense, almost like a young goddess playing jumprope but not quite so obvious.

I don't like doing Con sketches at a booth.  (Let alone more complete illustrations there.)  They rarely turn out right, I don't have my light table and references and can't shoot poses of myself and all that, so I'm never happy with the results.  So it's better for me to take home the more complicated ones and do them here, like I did with this one.

I may still fine-tune it more, but I though Heromorph at large might enjoy seeing me do something that's not Banzai Girl...

Folks here on Heromorph and over at exposure.keenspot.com -- where my EXPOSURE series continues -- really seemed to enjoy my "paper doll" version of Lisa Shannon.

So here's one for SHAWNA DIAZ!  Where I usually put Lisa in dresses and tiny skirts, Shawna tends to wear midriff-caring blouses and short shorts.

And, of course, her adventure uniform.

I'm illustrating two issues of EXPOSURE for Keenspot.com, the first of which launches in less than two weeks.  The story is called NIGHT OF THE LIVING DAD!, which I think is pretty amusing.

In the tale, a father with heaps and piles of responsibilities, dies -- but his family needs him so much, he continues his routine after he's passed away...and nobody notices the difference!

I wanted to start the story off with something pretty normal:  A father looking in on his sleeping child to make sure she's OK.  But I wanted it to be sexy, scary, and a little bit creepy, all at once.

Art is by yours truly, with color by Katrina Mae Hao.

Please let me know what you think!

Enough is enough!

Banzai Girl tears free of her shredded schoolgirl uniform, stumbling into the crowd, embarrassed and hurting, but still in one piece.  Her friends come to her rescue.

The Overseer and her father both show up, armed with weapons and a flying battlesuit for her.  Now she has the gear to battle the metal that wits alone can't overcome.

She's ready to kick ass and take names -- then decides the names don't matter!  That giant robot is going down!

(If you're at all curious about this storyline, it all takes place in my full-color series, BANZAI GIRLS #1 through #4 -- on sale in comics shops and available now through my website.  Don't be shy.  Check it out!)

This one started out as a technical exercise for a Creating Comics Seminar.  Here's what I was asked to draw:  "Holding her golden lasso, Wonder Woman turns to look toward the reader; she's standing near some mirrored surface that reveals that she's looking at Batman, who has a bloody arm."

Writing and/or drawing multiple comic book series can leave one a bit schizophrenic.  As creators, we have to get inside the minds of our characters, so that we can portray them well on paper.  We don't want to use stock poses and expressions; we'd much rather have our characters giving a performance, acting and reacting on the page.

Working on both my own schoolgirl creation BANZAI GIRL (serialized for free on banzaigirl.keenspot.com) and David Campiti's sexy supernatural series EXPOSURE (also serialied for free, on exposure.keenspot.com), I find myself studying and planning and defining the differences between lovely Lisa Shannon and sassy Shawna Diaz, and making sure I focus on the differences between them.

But sometimes, drawing two long-haired, delicious damsels panel after panel, page after page, can get a trifle confusing.  So I imagined myself - -- as Banzai Girl, of course -- as a psychiatrist trying to analyze Lisa and Shawna....who further confuse me by pulling off Mission: Impossible masks to reveal their true selves!

What do you think of my analysis?

Keeping with the same basic layout concept I used for the SNAKEMAN and the TIKBALANG images, here's a sassy-and-sexy one featuring a Werewolf!  Art by me, color by Katrina MaeHao.

I tried for a lot of moody imagery with this one:  Littered, filthy alleyway; Banzai Girl as the swooning damsel in distress; a furry, fearsome foe so frightening, not even heavy chains around his neck, arms, and legs could hold it!  Plus, I added bats, the -- of course! -- full moon...

...and for sass and sexiness, my character's showing maximum leg and cleavage (I'm never too far away from my Victoria's Secret push-up bra, so pretty you have to see it!)...and Michelle is leaping to the rescue, in her skin-tight leather jumpsuit!  Leather never looked that hot when it was mooing.  :)

I love making sure all my clothes are tailored to fit properly.  I wouldn't want to embarrass my boyfriend by having my skirts too long or my blouse too baggy, and I certainly wouldn't want to be chastised by my teachers for dressing sloppily.

Some of you have been asking me how much of my work is "made up" artwork, and how much is based on actual reference?

I think this is a good example to show you, from the line art from the first issue of my comic book.

In the big panel, my character is posed at her bicycle.  My friend shot a photo reference of me with the bike.  That was my starting point, but I learned early on that being "married" to the reference usually leaves artwork feeling too stiff.

So notice my changes in the drawing stage to make the figure more "alive":  My (longer!) hair and skirt (and tie!) are moving, blowing in the wind...I've curved the body more, pushing out breasts and buns...made the legs pose cuter...added details...even did little things like show the front wheel/spokes of the bicycle better, even while simplifying and thinning down the tires to alter the type of bike.

Hope this helps letting you see the process!

Hugs,
