~Unlike others who bear the name "Green Lantern," Alan Scott's power does not come from the Guardians of the Universe, but from the Starheart, a magical entity once imprisoned by the Guardians. The Starheart found its way to Earth where in 1939, in the shape of a lantern, it saved Alan from a train wreck. At the lantern's mental direction, Alan fashioned a ring from it that allowed him to tap the Starheart's great power.Perhaps influenced subconsciously by the Starheart's history, Alan adopted the identity of Green Lantern (the name of the great Corps administered by the Guardians).
hey gang,
here's hoping your january is a good one.
i had a blast putting together this image.i tried it once about 4 years ago with limited resources.i've had it filed away till now.it made a good base for this.for you die hard comic fans out there there are a few flaws in my design but one of my greatest joys is creating from scratch all the cool things i remember from my childhood just not always by tradition.

The Spectre is a modern god and superhero in the DC Comics canon. He was created by Jerry Siegel (co-creator of Superman) and Bernard Baily, and made his first appearance in More Fun Comics #51.

In early appearances, The Spectre was depicted as the spirit of a deceased cop that was on a mission to fight crime on earth. Like many popular comic book characters, the decline in popularity of the comic genre lead to a hiatus in the 1950s. Once the comic business picked up again in the mid 1960s, many of the popular comic characters, including The Spectre, were revived and often re-invented. The Spectre became a much more power avenging spirit with near omnipotence, only to be greatly decreased in power in the 1980s, leaving him as little more than a ghostly detective.

~ In early 1939, the success of Superman in Action Comics prompted editors at the comic book division of National Publications (the future DC Comics) to request more superheroes for its titles. In response, Bob Kane created "the Bat-Man." Collaborator Bill Finger recalled "Kane had an idea for a character called 'Batman', and he'd like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane's, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of ... reddish tights, I believe, with boots ... no gloves, no gauntlets ... with a small domino mask, swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign ... BATMAN."
Finger offered such suggestions as giving the character a cowl instead of a simple domino mask, a cape instead of wings, and gloves, and removing the red sections from the original costume. Finger said he devised the name Bruce Wayne for the character's secret identity: "Bruce Wayne's first name came from Robert Bruce, the Scottish patriot. Bruce, being a playboy, was a man of gentry. I searched for a name that would suggest colonialism. I tried Adams, Hancock ... then I thought of Mad Anthony Wayne."He later said his suggestions were influenced by Lee Falk's popular The Phantom, a syndicated newspaper comic strip character with which Kane was familiar as well.
Various aspects of Batman's personality, character history, visual design, and equipment were inspired by contemporary popular culture of the 1930s, including movies, pulp magazines, comic strips, newspaper headlines, and even aspects of Kane himself.Kane noted especially the influence of the films The Mark of Zorro (1920) and The Bat Whispers (1930) in the creation of the iconography associated with the character, while Finger drew inspiration from literary characters Doc Savage, The Shadow, and Sherlock Holmes in his depiction of Batman as a master sleuth and scientist.~(excerpt from wikipedia)

~Carter Hall was born in the mid 1910s, the reincarnation of an Egyptian prince named Khufu. Nothing is known of Hall's early life until, as an adult, he received a gift from James Rock, an archeologist. Rock had sent Hall a dagger with a crystal blade, and when Hall touched the blade, he fell into a trance. In a dreamlike state, Hall saw the life of Khufu?his life?unfold as in the days of ancient Egypt:
Khufu was a member of Egyptian royalty opposed by a priest of Anubis, Hath-Set. Hath-Set captured Khufu and attempted to torture him into submission. Khufu escaped and fled Hath-Set, seeking his lover, Shiera. Hath-Set doggedly pursued Khufu and one of his archers wounded Khufu just as the prince reached Shiera. Hath-Set offered both the lovers as a sacrifice to the god Anubis, using a crystal blade. As Khufu died, he swore to Hath-set that he would return one day and it would be Hath-Set's turn to die.~

~In Western pop culture, Raijin is usually known as Raiden (rai (雷, thunder) + den (電, lightning)), and depicted as a tall monk wearing a large straw hat (these hats are used widely throughout Asia to keep off rain), with the power to create storms, thunder, and lightning. The first use of this archetype was an appearance with other Eastern elemental gods in the film Big Trouble in Little China, released in 1986. It entered mainstream pop culture via the 1992 fighting game Mortal Kombat, which contained a character called Raiden somewhat similar to the version in Big Trouble In Little China, and repeated depictions of the character in multiple games in the same series have by now made him widely recognizable in the United States. There is a character in Hideo Kojima's epic video game Metal Gear Solid 2, who also appears later in Metal Gear Solid 4, called Raiden. He does not wear a hat, but does have long white or yellow hair and extraordinary physical abilities, also he has the use lightning to some extent. He is also in the popular American video game Warcraft 3 mod Defense Of The Ancients, which is popular worldwide, as a thunder-based hero. In the popular video game franchise, Pok?mon, the Pok?mon Voltolos is based on Raijin and/or Lei Gong, a similar Chinese thunder god. Voltolos is an Electric/Flying type, reflecting Raijin's abilities.~(excerpt from wikipedia)

Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities. Some scholars believe that the name, and indeed the goddess herself, was originally pre-Greek. Homer refers to her as Artemis Agrotera, Potnia Theron "Artemis of the wildland, Mistress of Animals". In the classical period of Greek mythology, Artemis (Greek: (nominative) Ἄρτεμις, (genitive) Ἀρτέμιδος) was often described as the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. In later Hellenistic times, she even assumed the ancient role of Eileithyia in aiding childbirth.

Artemis later became identified with Selene,a Titaness who was a Greek moon goddess, sometimes depicted with a crescent moon above her head. She was also identified with the Roman goddess Diana, with the Etruscan goddess Artume, and with the Greek or Carian goddess Hecate.

Kent Nelson was born in 1928 to Sven Nelson, a noted archaeologist, and Celestine Babcock Nelson, a spiritual medium. Celestine died under unknown circumstances shortly after Kent's birth, and Kent became a tagalong for his globe-trotting father.

In 1940, Sven and Kent were conducting a dig in the Valley of Ur in Mesopotamia when the younger Nelson stumbled upon an ancient sarcophagus containing the giant body of the mystic, Nabu the Wise. Upon opening the sarcophagus, Kent released poison gas which immediately killed his father.

Nabu, a mystical Lord of Order originally from the planet Cilia, took pity on the boy and used his magic to block the grief from the young boy's mind. Over the intervening months, Nabu schooled the boy in the ways of mysticism, teaching him to cast spells and fly. During this time, Kent aged years instead of weeks and had grown to adulthood by late summer.

Kent had grown fond of Nabu, but the Lord of Order required one last act, his own death. Hesitant, Nabu removed the inhibitions he had placed on his student's grief. Enraged by his father's death, Kent slew the old wizard. His body destroyed, Nabu revealed his true nature: an energy being, a millennia-old Lord of Order. Presenting Kent with two gifts: a helm and an amulet, he was joined with Nabu who used his body as an agent against the Lords of Chaos, becoming Dr. Fate.

The Atom introduced during the Silver Age of comic books in Showcase #34 (1961) is physicist and university professor Ray Palmer (named for real-life science fiction writer Raymond A. Palmer, who was himself quite short). Using a mass of white dwarf star matter, he fashioned a lens which allowed him to shrink down to subatomic size. Originally, his size and molecular density abilities derived from the white dwarf star material of his costume, controlled by mechanisms in his belt, and later by controls in the palms of his gloves. Much later, he gained the innate equivalent powers within his own body.

Wonder Woman is a DC Comics superheroine created by William Moulton Marston. She first appeared in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941). The Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously except for a brief hiatus in 1986.
Wonder Woman is an Amazon (based on the Amazons of Greek mythology) and was created by Marston, an American, as a "distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men." Her powers include superhuman strength, flight, super-speed, super-stamina, and super-agility. She is highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat and in the art of tactical warfare. She also possesses an animal-like cunning and a natural rapport with animals, which has in the past been presented as an actual ability to communicate with the animal kingdom. She uses her Lasso of Truth, which forces those bound by it to tell the truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara which serves as a projectile, and an invisible airplane.

Created during World War II, the character was initially depicted fighting the Axis military forces, as well as an assortment of supervillains. In later decades, some writers maintained the World War II setting, with many of its themes and story arcs, while others updated the series to reflect the present day. Wonder Woman has also regularly appeared in comic books featuring the superhero teams Justice Society (from 1941) and Justice League (from 1960). Arguably the most popular and iconic female superhero in comics, Wonder Woman is also considered a feminist icon, and she is regarded as extremely physically attractive even by the standards of the superheroine.

Mera was once an undersea queen in an alien otherworldly dimension commonly referred to as Dimension Aqua. Several years ago, a criminal named Leron seized control of the kingdom and deposed Queen Mera. Exiled from her kingdom, Mera fled Dimension Aqua for the Earth dimension whereupon she met the Atlantean sea-king, Aquaman. Aquaman and his sidekick, Aqualad, vowed to assist Mera in any way possible. Leron pursued Mera to Earth, and managed to capture her along with Aquaman. He brought them back to Dimension Alpha where they were imprisoned. Aided by the water sprite known as Quisp, Aquaman managed to free Mera and defeat Leron. However, rather than return to the throne to her kingdom, Mera elected to return to Atlantis with Aquaman.
hiya ,
tonights image was sort of a challenge from a fellow artist princedarkstorm.oddly enough i'm not well versed in her comic history save for a couple of old 35 cent comics from my child hood days.apparently she's making a small comeback in the comic world.i have to admit her power to manipulate water into solid objects stands out most for me.so much so i decided to see if i could create something in this piece to depict just that. welll after about 3 days i got pretty close to what i imagined... sort of.the finished project took about 5 renders in daz and 70 layers in photoshop not to mention about 10 psd's which i pieced together as a basis.nonetheless it was a very intense learning experience.
let me know what you think :)
