Yup... I thought I was done doing Ditko tributes myself but when my creative well's run dry again, I turn to the great master for inspiration. A lot of folks probably missed this one... it only ran 4 issues, Paul Levitz writing was pretty sharp on this tale of a man who trades his soul to a demon lord in exchange for ultimate combat skills so that he can get revenge on the baroness who enslaved him as a child but feels cheated when he extracts no joy from his vengeful triumphs and decides to battle his way down through the underworld to get his soul back. Pencils were by Steve Ditko and inks by Wally Wood, each geniuses in their own right and complimented each other here in a way that made them even better! |

| Cover Flip Challenge: Ghost Rider to Rawhide Kid pijon Monthly and other challenges 2012/8/12 20:31 2229 5
This one's for the cover flip challenge I chose Ghost Rider #68 to have a little fun with. I really didn't mess with Bob Budiansky's cover art too much, just added a few buttons on the shirt and a cowboy hat (from the Gil Kane collection) on the ground. I did change the logos, text boxes and the color of the boots and gloves. I also added some word balloons and musical notes. All quick and easy stuff.
I have nothing against gays or cowboys or gay cowboys. I am merely having fun taking a little jab at '03 Rawhide Kid editor Axel Alonso (now Marvel's Editor-in-Chief's) decision to mess with the Kid's (then) 46 yr history. |

| Captain Marvel vs. Thanos pijon Marvel Comics 2014/6/3 2:00 2232 4
I am looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. While I am happy that Thanos, one of Marvel's greatest villains will finally be making it to the big screen, he totally should have made his debut in a movie (or 3) facing Captain Marvel first!

| Hellboy Meets Googam, Son of Goom pijon Marvel Comics 2016/11/7 5:15 2245 6
Just my goofy little drawing before B worked his magic on it and turned it into an awesome painting! Goom and Googam are old school Kirby Marvel Monsters from shortly before he and Stan turned their attentions to superheroes. |

| Mighty Thor pijon Marvel Comics 2012/7/17 19:57 2250 6
My odd thought process here: WHAT IF Kirby had not done Thor in those early years but rather it was done by Al Williamson and Frank Frazetta. I would imagine it would've been a very different type of book with a different look, feel and type of story. This is the sort of approach I imagine they'd take. I just finished the book Al Williamson Hidden Lands. If you aren't familiar with Williamson's work from the 50's, check it out... you'll be blown away by the quality. |

| Hawk and Dove Unmasked pijon DC Comics 2015/2/2 6:29 2256 10
The Hawk and the Dove were a couple of obscure Steve Ditko characters for DC that never really caught on. They actually got more viewings from their single appearance in the animated Justice League TV show than from their entire run in comics. Anyway, one was supposed to be aggressive and violent the other peaceful, looking for smart solutions. They never seemed to make it work in the comics but I think if someone like Venture Bros Hank and Dean had replaced Hank and Don, might've been a hit. |

| Hulk and the Leader pijon Marvel Comics 2012/5/18 21:05 2283 6
Just finished reading Kirby, King of Comics by Mark Evanier. It was great inspiration for my latest... it's pure Jack Kirby tribute... all hail the King! This is based on an old Kirby poster. I got it all wrong but Jack's version kicks butt! I always had a special fascination for it since I first saw it in an ad in a Marvel comic when I was around 9 or 10. Of course, if I'd taken a magnifier to that ad (I hadn't), I would've been surprised to see it was Herb Trimpe's poster because everything about it screamed Kirby. According to Evanier (in Kirby, King of Comics), that poster had been one of "several last straws" at Marvel for Jack. Marvel had asked Kirby to design posters of their characters and so Kirby submitted 8 excellent pieces and in a rare moment, inked them himself. Apparently, some editors at Marvel decided the 4 of the posters had too much Kirby in them and rejected them, not paying Jack for the work on those. I'm sure that must've been insulting enough to Jack before they had Trimpe trace Jack's rejected piece while adding a more Trimpe styled face. Again, Jack was not paid. This was how Jack was treated in the house he built.
2 M4's with karate pants, ghost agent sweater and pirate shirt, posed in DS3 and rendered in Bryce. Leader's daddy longlegs tripod modeled in Hexagon, all other elements made in Bryce. Compositing and postwork in PS.

| Luke Cage II pijon Marvel Comics 2008/1/21 15:08 2285 4
A re-working of my last piece after some suggestions with some modest changes and a new more dynamic camera angle to give the hero more emphasis. Um, would it help if I said there was a really hot babe inside the helicopter? |

| Doctor's Dilemma: Chinny McFate pijon DC Comics 2007/5/2 12:02 2295 3
This was done for another site. The premise is to do a character in mad genius Temporal Dave's Squinty Mc Chin style. If you're not familiar with Dave's stuff, he's the guy that did the very funny BatHomer image in the upper right part of the Home Page. Since I'm such a huge fan of Squinty in particular and Dave in general, I actually picked up a pencil and drew something for the occasion (gasp!). I've also included the goofy little backstory I added over at the other site since folks seemed to enjoy that at least as much as the drawing.
Doctor's Dilemma: Chinny McFate Poor Kent Nelchin... as Chinworld's Dr. Fate, he would become the sorcerer supreme of this world simply by placing the mystic helmet of Fate over his head. Unfortunately, the ancient forces which placed these great magical powers within the helmet failed to consider the evolution of massive mandibles among the superheroes of the planet and poor Kent can't seem to get the helmet to fit right, no matter how hard he tries. This means he can't actually see when wearing the helmet and it causes his spells to misfire in unpredictable ways which makes poor Chinny one of the least called upon heroes of Chinworld. Squinty in particular, avoids working with him due to his own susceptibility to magic and has frequently been forced to come up with awkwardly lame excuses so as not to make poor Nelchin feel any worse.

| Mr. A pijon Other Comics 2010/2/1 5:47 2309 5
A tribute to (Spiderman co-creator) Steve Ditko and his character, Mr. A, the original ghost faced killah in the name of justice. While I don't see eye to eye with Ditko's Objectivist philosophies, I do admire his artistic integrity, sacrificing larger popularity and greater financial gains to follow his own vision. |

Yeah, I know, you never see pencils from me (it's pretty rare for me to pick one up these days)... I barely remember this show as I only seemed to catch it on late night cable after long nights out drinking with my buddies! It always seemed very "West Coast" to me as though I could hear some LA pitchman trying to push it on Network execs..."See there's this guy, Johnny Domino, sax player by night and crime fighter by, uh, later at night and he's got one bulgey eye and uh, one even bulgier eye and drives a purple Chrystler Prowler" ...oooh-kay (yes, that moon is made of cheese!)* *(found out after I wrote this that Nightman started as a Malibu Comic...oops!)

| Night of the Turtles pijon Other Comics 2010/9/22 0:12 2321 4
As I worked on this, I was struck by the fact that what (to me) is amusingly unique of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles among all supers is that while the rest wear masks to hide their identities, turtles appear to wear them so they can be told apart from one another
Credits: Daz's Martial Arts Weapons Pack and Multi-Sword BC Rooftopper Ninjas are David with Defenders of D'Akir outfit. Splinter is Monster Rat and Jinchuu Ken and Turtles are M3 with some homebrewed textures, props and morphs.
*Fixed the mixed up masks... thanks for the heads up, Danny! |

Some of my favorite toons.. Thought I'd try an experiment to see if I'd still feel like I didn't have enough spaces... yup, still not enough I did use different sized tiles underlapping the grid to define groups of films by individuals or organizations as the 2x2 blocks (4 squares) used for Bakshi, Pixar and Disney, all of whom have larger bodies of work worth checking out too. Long 3 x 1 blocks used for Laloux, Miyazaki and Ohtomo, and just two (2x1) for Linklater. There's 2 shorts that made the list... One, The Man Who Planted Trees is 30 minutes long but worth your time. | The Question pijon DC Comics 2013/11/3 21:57 2371 10
Spiderman creator Steve Ditko created this gritty hard boiled character back in 67 for Charlton. The character is notable for being considered one of the darkest and most grim of the silver age. The character was later acquired by DC comics where he's managed to show up perennially in a number of places. There was a lengthy run by Denny O'Neil and Dennis Cowans, he's appeared JL and other cartoons too. This character was also the basis for Rorschach from the book and movie "The Watchmen" |

| Daredevil Battles the Claw pijon Other Comics 2014/10/8 16:10 2380 11
No, NOT THAT Daredevil... the ORIGINAL Daredevil, a very popular character from the 40's, from Lev Gleason Publications. It has often been suggested that this wise cracking acrobat hero was very much the prototype not only for Marvel's early Daredevil but Spiderman as well. Not that it matters much because this Daredevil (Bart Hill) is free! That's right, this great hero and villain are public domain so anyone is free to use them in their own works, a factor which has kept this guy alive and well, used by different publishers. Bart Hill (Daredevil) had been raised in Australian Outback by Aborigines and used his combat and acrobatic skills to fight crime. He also employed his own metal boomerangs as weapons of choice. The villain, the Claw had been around since '39, originally the enemy of the Silver Streak (a superspeed type character), the book's title hero. Daredevil was a back up feature however starting with Daredevil's second appearance, Plastic Man creator Jack Cole would do a 5 issue run pitting DD against the Claw in an epic battle that would cement Daredevil's continued success. Still, the character is generally more closely associated with writer/artist Charles Biro and his terrific and successful 16 year run on the book! |

| Crossovers Gone Wrong: Flaming Carrot meets Axel Pressbutton and Laser Eraser pijon Other Comics 2013/9/10 11:45 2409 6
Flaming Carrot knew he'd made a big mistake. He was out at the lanes with his bowling team, the Mystery Men when some gamesmanship started with the opposing team, the Pin Wizards. Just because Carrot's bowling team were actual masked crimefighters, how was he to know the Pin Wizards were actual wizards?! The wizards did not take Carrot's bowling taunts well and cast a spell that sent him across time and space. Carrot didn't know where he'd ended up. The buildings looked like something from the future. One thing was clear, the angry robot-man chasing him had a major grudge against carrots.... It wasn't just carrots really. Even on his best day, Axel Pressbutton was still a raging psychotic psychopath but plants of all manner and variety are what really send him into a killing frenzy. It wasn't always this way for Axel. Once a mild mannered florist, he took delivery of a plant which happened to have with it a sentient carnivorous fungus which had managed to eat 3 quarters of Axel before he was rescued. However his mind had snapped from the shock and he was particularly embittered toward plants. The doctors who had fixed him up had taken sympathy and designed a button as part of his robot body that would send powerful waves of orgasm type pleasure to his body and mind when pressed as consolation for his loss. It's a bad design though as it's sometimes been used by adversaries to disable him during attacks ...not that Flaming Carrot could ever figure it out in time. He's never been the brightest of superheroes.
Axel's sometimes partner, Mysta Mystrelis AKA Laser Eraser thinks "not again" as she rolls her eyes and sighs while she reaches for her laser rifle. She knows she's going to have to put a couple of holes in those boys to put a stop to this nonsense before somebody gets hurt.
Axel Pressbutton originally created by writer Steve Moore and artist Alan Moore. Flaming Carrot is an original creation of Bob Burden's.
*fix: covered up a small strip of sky down by Carrot's knee and added a little more text. |

| Superman: Footnotes in Crime pijon DC Comics 2010/4/17 21:03 2427 6
Footnotes in Crime: Doug (the Thug) Williams was an ambitious career criminal. He had henched for all the top supervillains like Lex Luthor and the Joker but was determined to make more of himself. Williams always invested his share of the take in steroids and his "supersuit fund" while managing to stay out of jail by ratting out his co-workers. Finally, he saved enough to purchase the supersuit and weapons, deeming himself Heavy Artillery. Determined to make a name for himself among the major supervillains, Heavy A (as his peeps now called him) set out to knock off the largest bank he could find.Unfortunately he had never bothered learning geography and map reading skills and had the misfortune of picking a bank in Metropolis. It has been speculated that Heavy Artillery might have had a somewhat successful career in Supervillainy if only he'd picked his target area more carefully. |
