| Hitchcock inked by Bill Anderson pijon TV and Movies 2008/11/7 15:20 2706 8
Here's a blast from my past... I was just talking with an old friend recently, Bill Anderson who emailed me a copy of an old collaboration we did... my pencils and his inks, he'd kept the original so I'd all but forgotten about it till now. I remember giving him some fairly detailed shading in my pencils but man, it's the killer linework in his inks that really make the piece. |

| Hulk and the Leader pijon Marvel Comics 2012/5/18 21:05 2283 6
Just finished reading Kirby, King of Comics by Mark Evanier. It was great inspiration for my latest... it's pure Jack Kirby tribute... all hail the King! This is based on an old Kirby poster. I got it all wrong but Jack's version kicks butt! I always had a special fascination for it since I first saw it in an ad in a Marvel comic when I was around 9 or 10. Of course, if I'd taken a magnifier to that ad (I hadn't), I would've been surprised to see it was Herb Trimpe's poster because everything about it screamed Kirby. According to Evanier (in Kirby, King of Comics), that poster had been one of "several last straws" at Marvel for Jack. Marvel had asked Kirby to design posters of their characters and so Kirby submitted 8 excellent pieces and in a rare moment, inked them himself. Apparently, some editors at Marvel decided the 4 of the posters had too much Kirby in them and rejected them, not paying Jack for the work on those. I'm sure that must've been insulting enough to Jack before they had Trimpe trace Jack's rejected piece while adding a more Trimpe styled face. Again, Jack was not paid. This was how Jack was treated in the house he built.
2 M4's with karate pants, ghost agent sweater and pirate shirt, posed in DS3 and rendered in Bryce. Leader's daddy longlegs tripod modeled in Hexagon, all other elements made in Bryce. Compositing and postwork in PS.

| Influence Map: Comic Based TV Toons pijon Monthly and other challenges 2018/6/26 17:26 1445 3
Thought an On Demand menu for the format might work... I thought I was done with these but Ozzy's nitpick on my last one ended up providing inspiration for another. So I went in the other direction this time and rather than making it about the comics on which the media was based, I focused on the media this time (TV toons) rather than the comics from which they were derived. Thanks Ozzy! |

| Influence Map: Comics That Made Movies pijon Monthly and other challenges 2018/6/20 9:43 1584 6
I'm sure I could have filled this up with just the Marvel movies but I wanted to include others as well. My credits are spread pretty randomly in the Influence Map so I've included a list below more specific to who did each comic although that's a little dicey too as in some instances, I've credited the character's creators while in others, I've credited those whose story got adapted into the films. Not all of these films were great but the comics were and that's what I'm paying tribute to.
Hellboy - Mike Mignola The Crow - J. O'Barr Judge Dredd - John Wagner, Carlos Esquerra The Punisher - Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr. Watchmen - Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons Blade - Marv Wolfman, Gene Colan The Spirit - Will Eisner Spider-Man - Stan Lee, Steve Ditko Batman - Bob Kane, Bill Finger Snowpiercer - Jacques Lob, Jean-Marc Rochette Sin City - Frank Miller Jonah Hex - John Albano, Tony DeZungia Kick-Ass - Mark Millar, John Romita Jr. Thor - Stan Lee, Jack Kirby Heavy Metal - various artists (movie in part based on stories by Dan O'Bannon and Moebius, Rich Corben and Bernie Wrightson) Swamp Thing - Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson Superman - Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster Ghost Rider - Roy Thomas, Mike Ploog V for Vendetta - Alan Moore, David Lloyd Wanted - Mark Millar, J.G. Jones Road to Perdition - Max Allan Collins, Richard Piers Rayner 30 Days of Night - Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith Captain America - Joe Simon, Jack Kirby Wonder Woman - Charles Moulton, H.G. Peters Black Panther - Don McGregor, Rich Buckler Daredevil - Frank Miller Old Man Logan - Mark Millar, Steve McNiven

| Influence Map: Ditko pijon Monthly and other challenges 2018/6/8 10:38 1591 5
So I decided to try something a little different this time around. Rather than using the template, I decided to break the mold and step out from the grid. I focused on a single major influence on me for this influence map. Sure, Jack Kirby probably would have been the obvious choice, the artistic giant who practically built the house of Marvel single handedly. But instead, I went with Steve Ditko, focusing on some of the characters he had a hand in creating. I always thought Ditko was remarkably unique and innovative in his comics style. Everybody was trying to be Kirby back in the 60's but nobody could even figure out how to imitate Ditko. So in the spirit of Ditko, I tried a quirkier approach here It's all about Ditko heroes and art in my influence map: Top: Spider-man, Blue Beetle, Dr. Strange Middle: The Question, Captain Atom, The Creeper, Mr. A (Ditko Self Portrait) Bottom: Shade the Changing Man, Stalker, Squirrel Girl. (Background from Dr. Strange) There's plenty of other oddball Ditko characters like the Hawk and the Dove, Destructor, Speedball, Static, Killjoy and the Mocker but I just didn't have room for all of them! There is one Ditko design that is an absolute classic that most of you are very familiar with but didn't know it was his. Although Jack Kirby was the creator of Iron Man, that original suit was big and bulky. Iron Man's classic red and gold suit that remained largely unchanged for years... yup, Ditko did that too.

| Influence Map: Newspaper Artists pijon Monthly and other challenges 2018/6/10 20:05 1531 7
I figured this one would be an easy one to do and it was but once again, I feel like I've left out more than I've included! A couple of crossover artists here: Eisner started Spirit in the newspapers and later went to comics while Gil Kane started in comics before doing Star Hawks. Some of these others were big influences on some great comic artists, like Raymond's influence on Al Williamson, Foster's on Frank Frazetta and Caniff's on Jim Aparo. |

Actually managed to scribble out a few real ink drawings (as opposed to digital). October was half over by the time I even realized Inktober was going on. | Jack Banyon Cover pijon Other Comics 2018/11/14 17:57 1800 4
First off, I've always considered myself more of a guy who occasionally illustrates than an actual illustrator. This is one reason why I prefer coming up with my own images to doing commissions. Still, every now and again, I'll make myself available for this kind of work and that's kind of what happened here when I agreed to do the cover for the next issue of Roger Keel's Jack Banyon. Roger had a very specific idea of what he wanted... and it's a fine idea, I just wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off but I guess we need to challenge ourselves sometimes so I did here. In the end, I'n not entirely happy with what I did but I'm not entirely unhappy either. I tried to do a little bit of a golden age style to match the tone of the book but I was having a hard enough time just trying to get him what he'd asked for! Anyway, for any who might be curious, here are Roger's directions:
"In the foreground we can see Jack at the right of the cover, he is standing in the rear of a boat. He has one foot on the gunnel of the boat and is in a struggle with a man in a Nazi uniform. The Nazi is on another boat a the left of the cover in a similar pose. The Nazi has a gun (Luger??) in one hand. Jack is holding that hand and it is pointing up in the air. They are grabbing each other with their other hands. We can see a woman ( dark hair) holding a young boy( dark hair), in Jack’s boat. She is near to Jack and in the foreground. In the Nazi’s boat we can see the driver, man with thin mustache. (see notes at the end)
In the middle of the cover, behind Jack and the Nazi we can see the long neck and open mouth of a sea monster (Nessie).
If possible show a ruin castle in the far background, on the land.
Notes: The driver of the Nazi boat: Rupert Jones: About 5’ 10” thin, longish face. Thin moustache, slicked back hair. Smokes cigarette in holder. Has snooty expression on his face at all time. Well dressed. Perhaps with a cravat around his neck. He is about 40 in age.
I can send you a sizable Stone Island Comics logo. You can create a cover logo to suit the art.
Add Mine and John Lambert’s name to the cover. "
**********************************************************************************
It should be available sometime next year from Indy Planet (as the first couple of issues are now).

| Killjoy pijon Other Comics 2008/11/24 17:44 3063 8
Okay, guess I'm really plumbing the depths of obscurity this time! Google "Ditko Killjoy" and you might even find online reprints of Killjoy's two appearances as a backup feature in Charlton's E-Man. It is Steve Ditko at his most irreverent and at his silliest. Anyway I realized hadn't really done a decent Ditko tribute piece so I thought I'd attempt one with Killjoy attempting to land a shot on the very slippery S.S.S. Snake. |

| Manhunter: Goodwin and Simonson version pijon DC Comics 2013/10/8 19:51 1911 5
Gotta be specific, you know. DC has had many characters to go by that name.
Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson's Manhunter had the most humble of status at DC. Never had it's own title, ran as an 8 page backup in one of Batman's several titles (Detective) for 6 episodes before concluding in a full length Batman teamup story. It ran for 7 chapters between '73 and '74 and yet managed to pull in 6 major awards in that time. It certainly fueled my youthful enthusiasm when I'd first read it. Simonson's art was unlike anyone I'd seen doing superheroes at that time, stylish and brilliantly laid out too and Goodwin's script also seemed better than anything DC or Marvel had going at the time. So to one of my greatest comic inspirations, a tribute I'd wanted to do for a while... the one I'd sworn was impossible to do in 3D but just to prove I'm an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about, I did it anyway! So here he is, facing off against an army of his clones once again.
Stonemason's Village Courtyard Daz Supersuit M4 Hardcore Boots Genesis Journeyer Scout Boots Rievel Hair Firearm Pack
I can't remember exactly where I found the Mauser pistol... it was a freebie in sketchup format. Bracers, belts, leg braces, shuriken made in Hexagon. Shirt sleeves made in Hexagon, converted to dynamic cloth in Poser then exported back to Daz.
*update: Someone elsewhere told me they were loosing the shuriken in the clone shirt shadows so I adjusted it's location and upped the brightness and contrast a little. |
