| BANZAI GIRL: Referencing
JinkyCoronado Other Comics 2009/8/4 12:05

Some of you have been asking me how much of my work is "made up" artwork, and how much is based on actual reference?
I think this is a good example to show you, from the line art from the first issue of my comic book.
In the big panel, my character is posed at her bicycle. My friend shot a photo reference of me with the bike. That was my starting point, but I learned early on that being "married" to the reference usually leaves artwork feeling too stiff.
So notice my changes in the drawing stage to make the figure more "alive": My (longer!) hair and skirt (and tie!) are moving, blowing in the wind...I've curved the body more, pushing out breasts and buns...made the legs pose cuter...added details...even did little things like show the front wheel/spokes of the bicycle better, even while simplifying and thinning down the tires to alter the type of bike.
Hope this helps letting you see the process!
Hugs,

I recently found out that one of my new neighbors is a "closet" sci-fi freak who likes to write his own stories. He's pretty protective about his stuff but for some reason decided to let me browse through some of his works. One particular storyline caught my attention titled "Desolation Quest" about a young StellarKnight named Vara Kandor who is on a mission to stop a mysterious force that is destroying planets. This was just something I put together to show him what his published novels might look like. Credits: Daz Studio 3.0/Photoshop 7/V3/Utilize -Liquid Halo |

WooHoo! I made it on time.
Well, been learning how to use a tablet and this is my first attempt. I hope that until the end of the Smackdown, I'll be better than this. It was my intention to draw the all thing but time was running out so I had to borrow a couple images to finish this.
About the story...Basically the Question thinks the Smackdown is part of a big conspiracy and decided to meditate about his next move... |

JinkyCoronado Original Characters 2009/8/1 20:43

For a change of pace, here's manip of everyone's favorite (I hope) Asian schoolgirl!
Banzai Girl and her best friend Katie J struggle to stave off the alien nightmare looming behind the door!
Details: I drew the base illustration and posed with my friend Kat. Don Feenerty shot the photo in the hallway outside his studio in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The angle does a good job of hiding how Kat's significantly actually taller than I am at this point (she's portrayed as younger and shorter than I am in the comic book), because I'm only 5 feet tall and weigh 95 pounds.
Eugene Perez added the monster and big bullet holes, changed a big water gun into Katie J's weapon, and fattened up the heels on my shoes. Kat's hair is also manipped into the style she wore years earlier when I started drawing her into the comic.

Enough is enough!
Banzai Girl tears free of her shredded schoolgirl uniform, stumbling into the crowd, embarrassed and hurting, but still in one piece. Her friends come to her rescue.
The Overseer and her father both show up, armed with weapons and a flying battlesuit for her. Now she has the gear to battle the metal that wits alone can't overcome.
She's ready to kick ass and take names -- then decides the names don't matter! That giant robot is going down!
(If you're at all curious about this storyline, it all takes place in my full-color series, BANZAI GIRLS #1 through #4 -- on sale in comics shops and available now through my website. Don't be shy. Check it out!)

Well another 23 hour used up here, and here is the final result. Not happy with a couple of things here, but it is what it is. Someone said I should post more, but with the kids and work its sometimes hard. Plus I have some commission stuff I am working on. But I will try my best to keep up more often here adding to the works on the site. The model is Jana Foxy here, one of my favorites. Texture on top is CS3 made, Texture on Bottoms CS3 made. Texture on Stars and pants also as well made in Photoshop here. As well as the rest of the uniform to boot. Unfortunately they are harder to see when it gets smaller or image size. But its the smaller details that count, so they are in there. So hope everyone likes it here. Take a look and let me know. And in advance here thanks for the comments and looking. Greatly do appreciate it. Stargirl is property of DC comics and belongs to them. Rest is artwork by me. Thanks everyone! |

This picture reminds me of one of the isues with photomanipping: We've got great models in static poses. A lot of these are comic characters and we're used to seeing them in action, so we try to build action around this simple poses.
Having said that, I went ahead and gave it a try. This is probably why I like to use Poser to set up the pose for a lot of my art.
Anyway, comments are sure appreciated. I think I'm getting better.

drunkendragon DC Comics 2009/7/23 21:30
4666 19
Bio suggested an image featuring the golden age WW. I am happy to comply.
So here she is, in classic pinup pose to commemorate her early years as more of a starlette than superheroine. Long before she became a fighting femme of female fury. Whilst still retaining her ideals of honor, strength and grace (as seen in the mirrors)
At least, this is how I'd imagine a display set up for her in the DC archive's Hall of Fame.
Anyway, V4.2 as wondy, with bodysuit texture by me. Centurion shield and sword, Valkyrie boots, Tariena Crown and Rug and mirrors from the Bunny set by Richabri (renderosity) |
