Finally finished this piece which has taken me just over a month in all to complete. Would have been done sooner but kept adding more characters.
In the end from left to right, with their actors and actresses, the characters are Sunspot Aka Roberto DeCosta (Wilmer Valderrama), Mirage Aka Danielle Moonstar (Karina Lombard), Meltdown Aka Tabitha Smith (Christina Applegate), Magma Aka Amara Aquilla (Unknown), Wolfsbane Aka Rahne Sinclair (Kiera Knightley), Karma Aka Xi'an Coy Manh (Jaymee Ong) and Cannonball Aka Samuel Guthrie (Christopher Masterson).
All work was done in Photoshop 7 using a mix of visual effects created with Photoshop's own filters in conjunction with Eye Candy 4000 and Alien Skin Xenofex.
Hope everyone agrees the end result was worth all the work. |

This is the third picture in my Hero's of Valiant series. for those not familiar with this character:Jack Boniface was a jazz saxophone player from new orleans. Unknown to him, he was chosen by a voodoo cult to become Shadowman to fight evil. One night he was bitten by a vampiric Spider Alien. Jack does not know what saved him after her poison knocked him out - only that when he awoke, she was gone. But she infected his blood with a poison that altered his use of the Darque Power when he became Shadowman. Since that night, with each sunset, Jack is overcome by the urge to seek and destroy evil. Drug dealers, in particular, are targets of his nocturnal patrols.
The manip it self started out as a picture of that guy from 2 fast 2 furious. All i really did was add the shirt, hair, and mask. I really like how the mask turned out. |

Continuing my posting of my older manips.
A photomanip that sprung to mind for no particular reason other than it will get a few friends of mine swooning. :) The actor Heath Ledger (of A Knight's Tale fame) seemed to have the right features and 'look' for Warren as I imagined him. His face was a basis for the manip. The body came from a random tailoring site, while the feet came from another image. The background was also found randomly on the web. The wings are an amalgamation of those worn by Alan Rickman in Dogma and some worn by Jennifer Lopez for a FHM photoshoot. The image was compiled in Photoshop 7 and finished off using the Little Fluffy Clouds filter.

Continuing my posting of my older manips while I play catch up with my New Mutants pic.
Stacy isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I was just beginning to really like the character when she was binned from Uncanny X-men. So this is my tribute to a character with a lot of potential. Got to love the self proclaimed 'first X-man to make a living on her back'.
The snake skin effects were produced with photos of various snakes from the web, combined with other reptile pics, and then imported with use of the opacity and hue and saturation control panels in Photoshop 7.
The background image came from a performance troupe called the Fluffgirl Society. Don't ask me what they perform, I didn't dare guess from the pic.

Since I've been a bit tied up working on a new manip, I have a couple of old pieces still to post. This is one of them. Obviously inspired by the comic look for Shadowcat, Lacy Chabert sprung to mind after her appearance in Lost in Space and she seems to have the right look for the young Kitty Pryde.
Images came from various sources - the clothing is a blend of actual clothes and in some places simply the manipulation of skin with the Smart Blur tool to give a leather effect. The basic pose is Kelly Brook, and for once I didn't do an awful lot beyond adding clothing, combining various elements from fashion websites. |

I'd been toying with the idea of a Jubilee manip for a while, but didn't get around to doing anything about it until fairly recently - for Jubilee's actress I've used model/actress Victoria Jolly who seems to have the features and youngish looks that Jubilee has always had. I've had fun with this image, lifting elements from around 30 other model pics to create the image - for example, the coat is actually made up from 3 different jackets, the top Jubilee is wearing is from Christina Aguilera, the legs are Donna Air's, the hair came from a style catalogue, the hands belong to Krista Allen and Pamela Anderson - there's the usual Frankenstein's mix of body parts there. |

| Fathom
Squedge Other Comics 2003/12/15 14:28

*updated production notes* If I keep getting all these compliments, I'll get a big head! (Not that I mind...)
I keep getting asked the question, so here's a pretty basic answer:
How did I do the Fathom pic? Well... I'll try to explain it. I started with the concept. I wanted to do a Fathom pic that both showed her body and her powers in an interesting way, so I settled on the concept of her in water form swimming in the ocean.
I went into Poser and used the Poser 4 Nude Female model, and played until I was happy with her positioning. I relaized pretty early on that I wanted a real face. There are some things you can cheat away with poser, the face isn't really one of those... I wanted the clear lines and a definite pose, though, so scrounging through hours of source pics didn't appeal to me. For some reason, whenever I see a Fathom comic, I think of Claire Forlani, so she was my first (only, really) choice for the facial model. I scrounged up a decent pic of her and went searching for a base pic for the background. I ended up grabbing a pic that someone rendered in a 3d program of the sea bed.
Next, I set about attaching Claire's lovely face to the poser body, both of which I had desaturated. I matched the greys as closely as I could and then inverted the image to a photo negative. I applied the "plastic wrap" filter to the image with a fairly high highlight strangth, a medium level of detail, and a low level of smothness, to give the "watery" appearance. I duplicated the layer, and set one layer to a "hard light" setting with an opacity of 36%, and the other to a "luminosity" setting at the same opacity. The low opacity and layer settings allow the figure to seem transparent but solid at the same time.
Then I created a new, empty layer with the following effects: drop shadow, inner glow, inner shadow, bevel and emboss. I played with the seetings on the layer, changed the opacity to 74%, the fill to 3% and painted hair on her with a small paint brush using the color white. Unhappy with the lack of "motion" of the piece, I did another layer, similar to the hair layer, but with an outer glow, as well, and the opacity and fill set to 100%. In this layer, I used a specail brush made of lots of individual dots. I "painted" the air bubles around her in white with it, staying roughly around the frame of her body, deleting or undoing any I didn't like.
I added a bit of grain (noise filter) to the background, to make it more photo-real, and then did the logo and signature.
Yes, there are an infinite number of little tweaks I gave the pic all the way through the process, but I can't remember them all without going through each saved version of the image (I save A LOT so that I can remember how I did a particular effect, or go back a step if necessary. Repeating your successes is much easier that way, as is avoiding repeating those elements which are particularly unsuccessful.) This is just the bare bones of how I did the pic.
Whaddya think? |
